Jomon Bunka, or Jomon culture, was based on hunting, fishing and gathering.
Most of Japanese students can easily recall a straw rope pattern pottery as a main characteristic item of this culture because they saw this in the first page of Japanese history textbooks.
Besides the pottery, many useful tools were invented such as a fish hook, a bow and arrow.

The Jomon period extends from 10,000 B.C to 300 B.C.
During this period, people’s life changed drastically from relocating life in order for chasing food to stable settlement life.

People dug down the ground to make the floor and set up pillars to support the roof.
This was the beginning of a real house called a pit house.
Then helmets appeared and there were houses, graves and shell midden.

Jomon culture was not uniform in all the regions in Japan but was various cultural styles depending on each region.
