太陽の表面で起こる爆発現象「太陽フレア」が頻繁に発生した影響により、世界各地でオーロラが観測されている。

太陽フレアは、強い磁場を持つ太陽表面の黒点で起こる。爆発で強力なエックス線や電気を帯びた粒子（プラズマ）が宇宙空間に飛び出す。発生するエックス線の強さに応じて５段階に分けられており、１段階上がるごとに規模は１０倍になる。

情報通信研究機構によると、８～１０日に最大クラスの太陽フレアを複数回観測した。
