(I feel a very deep connection with them.)

Beyond the clouds, the promised place

In an alternate postwar world, in 1996, Japan was divided into north and south. The Union, a group of communist countries that covers half of the world, is under the control of Ezo (modeled on Hokkaido. Ezo is the former name of Hokkaido), and in the center of the island is an extremely tall, pure white mountain. A tower was being constructed. But no one knows what Union's intentions are.

Makoto Shinkai

Regarding the title, Shinkai said, ``The word 'Kumo no Mukou' conveys the positive intentions of the characters. It's not now, it's not here, there's a 'promised place' ahead of them. I just want to find a clear goal and ideal that I can call my "promised place."
