Twitter has launched a new function that allows people to send and receive money on its platform. The company said that the new “tip jar” feature is an easy way to support experts and journalists. 

A small icon added to the user’s profile has a drop-down menu for payment providers like PayPal. Some users have criticized Twitter for allowing personal information such as email addresses to be exposed. In some cases, the information was visible even if no money was sent. 

Security expert Rachel Tobac advised Twitter of the problem. They thanked her for noticing but said since PayPal handled that information, they had no control over it. 

PayPal said that switching the payment option from “goods and services” to “friends and family” will solve the problem. Twitter added that they are updating the tip jar information to make it clear that some personal details might be shared. 

Twitter has seen its user growth slow in recent years. The tip jar is the latest attempt to boost growth.
