終戦の詔書は、１９４５年８月１４日の御前会議でポツダム宣言受諾が決定されたのを受け、発布された。翌１５日正午には、昭和天皇が詔書を読み上げた玉音放送がラジオで流れた。

朕（チン）深ク世界ノ大勢ト帝国ノ現状トニ鑑（カンガ）ミ
非常ノ措置ヲ以テ時局ヲ収拾セムト欲シ
茲（ココ）ニ忠良ナル爾（ナンジ）臣民ニ告ク
朕ハ帝国政府ヲシテ米英支蘇四国ニ対シ其ノ共同宣言ヲ受諾スル旨通告セシメタリ
抑々（ソモソモ）帝国臣民ノ康寧（コウネイ）ヲ図リ万邦共栄ノ楽ヲ偕（トモ）ニスルハ皇祖皇宗ノ遺範ニシテ朕ノ拳々（ケンケン）措カサル所

斯（カク）ノ如クムハ朕何ヲ以テカ億兆ノ赤子（セキシ）ヲ保（ホ）シ皇祖皇宗ノ神霊ニ謝セムヤ是レ朕カ帝国政府ヲシテ共同宣言ニ応セシムルニ至レル所以ナリ

【現代語訳】

私は、深く世界の情勢と日本の現状について考え、非常の措置によって今の局面を収拾しようと思い、ここに忠義で善良なあなた方国民に伝える。
私は、日本国政府に、アメリカ・イギリス・中国・ソ連の4国に対して、それらによる共同宣言（ポツダム宣言）を受諾することを通告させた。
そもそも、日本国民の平穏無事を確保し、すべての国々の繁栄の喜びを分かち合うことは、歴代天皇が大切にしてきた教えであり、私が常々心中強く抱き続けているものである。
先にアメリカ・イギリスの2国に宣戦したのも、まさに日本の自立と東アジア諸国の安定とを心から願ってのことであり、他国の主権を排除して領土を侵すようなことは、もとより私の本意ではない。
しかしながら、交戦状態もすでに4年を経過し、我が陸海将兵の勇敢な戦い、我が全官僚たちの懸命な働き、我が1億国民の身を捧げての尽力も、それぞれ最善を尽くしてくれたにもかかわらず、戦局は必ずしも好転せず、世界の情勢もまた我が国に有利とは言えない。
それどころか、敵国は新たに残虐な爆弾（原子爆弾）を使い、むやみに罪のない人々を殺傷し、その悲惨な被害が及ぶ範囲はまったく計り知れないまでに至っている。
それなのになお戦争を継続すれば、ついには我が民族の滅亡を招くだけでなく、さらには人類の文明をも破滅させるに違いない。
そのようなことになれば、私はいかなる手段で我が子とも言える国民を守り、歴代天皇の御霊（みたま）にわびることができようか。
これこそが私が日本政府に共同宣言を受諾させるに至った理由である。
私は日本と共に終始東アジア諸国の解放に協力してくれた同盟諸国に対して、遺憾の意を表さざるを得ない。
日本国民であって戦場で没し、職責のために亡くなり、戦災で命を失った人々とその遺族に思いをはせれば、我が身が引き裂かれる思いである。
さらに、戦傷を負い、戦禍をこうむり、職業や財産を失った人々の生活の再建については、私は深く心を痛めている。
考えてみれば、今後日本の受けるであろう苦難は、言うまでもなく並大抵のものではない。
あなた方国民の本当の気持ちも私はよく分かっている。
しかし、私は時の巡り合わせに従い、堪え難くまた忍び難い思いをこらえ、永遠に続く未来のために平和な世を切り開こうと思う。
私は、ここにこうして、この国のかたちを維持することができ、忠義で善良なあなた方国民の真心を信頼し、常にあなた方国民と共に過ごすことができる。
感情の高ぶりから節度なく争いごとを繰り返したり、あるいは仲間を陥れたりして互いに世情を混乱させ、そのために人としての道を踏み誤り、世界中から信用を失ったりするような事態は、私が最も強く戒めるところである。
まさに国を挙げて一家として団結し、子孫に受け継ぎ、神国日本の不滅を固く信じ、任務は重く道のりは遠いと自覚し、総力を将来の建設のために傾け、踏むべき人の道を外れず、揺るぎない志をしっかりと持って、必ず国のあるべき姿の真価を広く示し、進展する世界の動静には遅れまいとする覚悟を決めなければならない。
あなた方国民は、これら私の意をよく理解して行動してほしい。
