Ms. Rina Yamaguchi

Graduated from Tama Art University /Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Graphic design

Bravis International

Hello. My name is Yamaguchi. I won the prize in ASPaC Awards 2010, Confectionary category.

Now I work as a designer at Bravis International. Before participating in this ASPaC, I had absolutely no plans about my future. Nevertheless, the reason I am here in this company and engage myself in package design is ASPaC. ASPaC would be the turning point in your life just like it was for me. Also, I believe challenging ASPaC will be a good opportunity to understand package design deeply. Good Luck for your Japan competition and Asia final competition!

--Interview when she won the prize--

A fateful encounter with my employer

-Well, straight to the point, what is the most visible benefit of participating in this contest for you?

The biggest achievement for me is to have met Bravis International where I work now. Before the contest, I had never thought of my career after graduating from the university. Through the contest, I had recognized the wonderful side of package design and decided to be a package designer in the future!

-So, this contest is where you met with your current working place “Bravis International”?

Yes♪

There were corporate trainings in the winners’ program. In this program, I visited Bravis International, which I reckon now was a turning point in my life. Then I thought I wanted to work here!! In fact I had a job interview at Bravis International after the contest.

-I see. If we call it a coincidence, it would be a coincidence. Anyway you had a very good chance.

To my great happiness, they acknowledged my achievement in the contest and I had an unofficial offer of employment. I believe this is fate that I participated in the contest and found both my dream and the place of work! I am so grateful. (Grin)

-Your work gives us an impression of typically Japanese; could you tell us the concepts?

The theme of this work is harmony between the past and the present. Bamboos and balls represent traditional past design and the aggregation of paper strap which images bamboos represents geometrical present design. I have achieved the package design as I intended. I spent as long as two or three weeks for working out the concepts to complete the form. Really I was exhausted at that time.

-Lastly, could you tell us your dream?

I am going to be a production designer *1 and therefore I will mainly create design for products of clients. The immediate goal is bringing out into the world the design I will have worked with, and the design will be accepted by society. It is very exciting to think that readers of this interview might actually take in their hand the merchandise I created the designs for!

*1: Production designers work in design companies not as in-house designer.

-Thank you very much. We are looking forward to the day when we are very excited with your design products!
