This year's goals my great-grandmother gave me

My paternal grandmother said that she was from a wealthy family in Ayabe, Kyoto.
I don't know how rich her family was, but I remember her saying so herself.
"Normally, your grandpa would have had to be a son-in-law, but he was stubborn, so he refused".
So she moved to Osaka to get married.

The other day when I went to my mother's house, she told me that If I needed kimono related items there, take them home because she wanted to throw away things for preparing the end of her life.

When I was taking out the items in drawers, I found brand new clothes.
The red color of a wrapping paper had transferred a little, but the silk was pure white.
My mother told me that it was woven by my great-grandmother, who spun silk thread with her own hands.

I have no idea the time in which my great-grandmother lived, but I was surprised to find someone in my own family doing such a thing.
The Genji Monogatari also describes that Murasaki no Ue was good at dyeing kimonos, so I was convinced that my grandmother must have come from a wealthy family, because her mother made kimonos with her own hands.

Also I found my father's kimono, which was tailored from great-grandmother's silk clothes.
The fabric, woven with hand-spun irregular thickness silk threads and dyed a beautiful navy, was shimmering as the night sky.

Since the end of last year, I have gradually become more and more interested in kimonos.
Also I have encountered her clothes at this time, I can no longer turn away.

This year, I'm going to alter my father's kimono.
Then I will get a kimono tailored with her new clothes for myself.

Those two are this year's goals.

父方の祖母は綾部のお嬢さんだったらしい。
その程度がどれほどだったかはわかりかねるけれど、かつて彼女自身がそう言っていたのを覚えている。
「ほんまやったら、おじいちゃんが婿に入らなあかんかったところを、あの人は頑固でねえ」
そうして彼女は大阪に嫁いできた。

先日、実家に帰った時に母に言われた。
「もう終活するから、着物関係でいるものあったら持って帰って」

そうしてごそごそしていると、まっさらな反物が出てきた。
包まれている包装紙の赤が少し色移りしてしまっているものの、真っ白な紬だ。
母が言うには、それは私の曽祖母にあたる人が、自分の手で蚕の糸を紡いで織ったものらしい。

曽祖母が生きていた時代のことはまったく想像がつかないが、自分の家系にそんなことをしている人がいたなんて驚きだった。
源氏物語でも、紫の上は着物を染めるのが上手だなんていう描写もあるくらいだから、そうして自らの手で着物をこしらえるということは、なるほど、祖母はお嬢さんだったのかと納得した。

それ以外にも、同じ曽祖母の紬で仕立てた父の着物も出てきた。
いびつな太さの手紡糸で織り上げられ、綺麗な濃紺に染められ生地は、まるで夜空のように艶やかなきらめきを放っていた。

昨年の終わり頃から、むくむくと高まってきている着物熱。
このタイミングで出会ってしまったのだから、もう目を背けるわけにはいかない。

今年は父の着物をリフォームしよう。
そして、新の反物を自分用に仕立てよう。

それが今年の目標に決まった。
