はじめに

これまでイギリス英語を中心に様々な方の「英語」に触れ、少なくともRPアクセントにはある程度親しんできたという自覚があります。それでもやはり、ネイティブの言葉が聞き取れないということがあります。

東イングランドのNorwichを拠点に活動するBrittany BathgateさんのVLOGを見た時、そう思わされました。

そして、なぜ彼女の英語が聞き取れなかったか、ネイティブが話す時に無意識に行なっていることをあらためて分析してみました。

Brittany BathgateさんはイギリスNorfolk州・Norwichを拠点に、ファッション、インテリアデザイン、ライフスタイルにおけるアイデアを発信しています。特に好きなのは彼女のナレーションで、没入感があり、VLOGの一部のように感じさせてくれます。英語学習者に特化してコンテンツを発信している方と異なり、視聴者が聞き取りやすいように分かりやすいように話したりすることは一切ないため、より本格的なのが良いですね。その結果、彼女のありのままの英語を聞くことができます。

彼女が住むNorfolkという東イングランドの地域にも訛りがあり、Brittanyのアクセントはそこまで癖は強くないものの、RPアクセントとは確実に違うニュアンスを感じます。いくつか気付いた特徴として、’Short Vowel’ と呼ばれる “/æ/“ の発音が多く見られたり、Vowel（母音）が二つ続く音 ’Diphthongs’ の発音、イントネーションが異なる印象を受けました。

ネイティブが頻用する'Connected Speech'と'Weak Forms'

聞き馴染みのないアクセントでも、ネイティブがリズム良く話すために自然に行っている話し方の特徴を知っておくことで、文脈を理解できる程度は聞き取ることができると実感しています。

よく使われているのが'Connected Speech'と'Weak Forms’です。これによってリズム良く口から言葉を発することができたり、英語特有の強弱が生まれます。

一方、これによって特定の単語の発音が変化し、ネイティブではない私たちにとって「早い」「聞き取れない」と感じてしまうのです。

Weak Formsで発音がよく変化する、典型的な例を以下にあげてみます。

コミュニケーションにフォーカスする

一括りに「英語」といえども、国や地域によって、はたまた人によってアクセントや話し方、イントネーションなど様々です。会話のキャッチボールにおいて聞き取る能力はもちろん重要ですが、英会話の本質は、結局のところコミュニケーションに行き着きます。

個人的に「一言一句聞き取れなくても、7割理解できれば良し」と考えていますし、会話そのものにもっとフォーカスしていきたいと思っています。

Introduction

I've been immersing myself in English, especially British English for a while. At least, I feel I have a fair understanding of the modern RP accent. With that being said, sometimes I still struggle to hear native speakers' English.
Brittany Bathgate is a fashion creator/YouTuber, based in Norwich, East England and watching her vlog made me realise this.

In this article, I would like to explain the reason why I didn't catch her English as well as analyse things native English speakers often do in their natural conversation.

Brittany Bathgate gives us some ideas on fashion, interior design and lifestyle. What I especially like about her vlog is her narration, it immerses me in her vlog and makes me feel part of it. Unlike someone who creates some content specifically for English learners, she never tailors her speech to make it easier for us to hear, which is great because it’s more authentic in real life. As a result, we can listen to her natural English. Norfolk, a part of East England, has its own accent. It certainly feels different from the RP accent, though Brittany doesn’t have a strong one. Some characteristics of the accent that I picked up are: the '/æ/' sound, known as a short vowel, is used a lot and diphthongs sound slightly different to me.

Connected Speech and Weak Forms

If you notice what native speakers do to let their speaking flow, I’m sure you can get the gist of the context even if you come across unfamiliar accents.
People often use connected speech and weak forms. On the one hand, these techniques help them let the words flow and create a strength and weakness that is unique to the English language. Check out this video for more information about sentence stress and weak forms.

On the other hand, it changes the pronunciation of some words, which is why it sounds fast or hard for us to hear. I’m going to write down typical examples of weak forms;

Focusing on Communication

English has variations depending on the country, region, accents, intonation and the way of speaking. There is no doubt that your listening skill is important to have a conversation back and forth, but after all, the essence of what makes English conversation great is communication.
In my opinion, even if you can’t get every single phrase, understanding roughly 70% is adequate. Then I’d like to focus more on the conversation itself.
