数年前に知り合ったイギリス人の友人がいわゆる「Snack exchange」を提案してくれてから、これまで4回お菓子の交換を行ってきました。個人的な好みや感想を交えながら、いくつかイギリスのスナック菓子（＋紅茶）をご紹介させていただきます。

#1　ジャファ・ケーキ　Jaffa Cakes (McVitie’s)

平たい円状でビスケットのような見た目の”ケーキ”です（初めからいきなりスナックではなくケーキの紹介です）。スポンジ生地にオレンジ風味のジャムを挟み、表面がチョコレートで覆われています。自分が食べたことがあるイギリスのスナック菓子の中で、間違いなく一番のお気に入りです。なお、製造メーカーのマクビティが、ジャファ・ケーキは「ビスケット」ではなく「ケーキ」であると主張し、裁判で勝利したというのは有名な逸話ですね。

#2　ジャミー・ドジャーズ　Jammie Dodgers (Burton's Biscuit Co)

少し粘り気のあるジャムをサンドしたビスケットです。ジャミー・ドジャーズといえば、ラズベリー風味が代表的です。シンプルな味わいで紅茶やコーヒーとの相性も抜群です。

#3　デイリー・ミルク　Dairy Milk (Cadbury)

イギリスの老舗ブランド、キャドバリーの定番商品であるミルクチョコレートバーです。イギリスのチョコは正直甘すぎるという印象がありますが、デイリー・ミルクは甘すぎず、濃厚なミルクの味わいが感じられ美味しかったです。

#4　ティーケーキ　Teacakes（Tunnock’s)


ビスケット生地をベースにマシュマロを乗せ、ミルクチョコレートで覆われた丸いドーム型のお菓子です。チョコとマシュマロ、ビスケットの組み合わせは王道で間違いありません。

#5　クリーム・エッグ　Creme Egg (Cadbury)


卵型で銀紙に包まれた見た目は、日本でもお馴染みのチョコエッグを思わせる見た目ですが、なんと中身まで本物の卵のようなのが驚き。黄身と卵白に見える部分の正体は「フォンダン」と呼ばれる製菓材料の一種のようです。つまりは砂糖の塊ですので、ご想像通りの（いや想像以上の）甘さです。味はともかく、いい話のネタになるお菓子ですね。

#6　Nakd フルーツ＆ナッツバー　Nakd Peanut Delight Fruit & Nut Bar (Natural Balance Foods)

原材料はデーツ、ピーナッツ、海塩だけ。天然素材にこだわって作られているピーナッツバーです。ピーナッツ以外にも多くのフレーバーがありますが、全て砂糖、グルテン・小麦・乳製品不使用と、ビーガンフレンドリーの商品でもあります。それでいて味も美味しいです。

#7　ポーク・スクラッチングス　Hand-Cooked Pork Scratchings (Mr Porky)

ポーク・スクラッチングス、ポーク・クラックリングとして知られている、豚の皮を油で揚げたスナックです。癖のある味と独特の食感は好みが分かれると思いますが、病みつきになる一品で個人的には好みでした。

#8　センセーションズ　ピーナッツ　Sensations Thai Sweet Chilli Coated Peanuts (Walkers)

ピーナッツをチリペッパー風味の粉末で覆ったスナックです。この手のスナックは目新しさはありませんが、中毒性がありもはや危険な美味しさです。ちなみに、タータン柄のパッケージでお馴染みのショート・ブレッドやビスケットを製造するスコットランドのWalkersという会社がありますが、全く違う会社ですので混同しないように。

#9　マーマイト・ライスケーキ　Marmite Rice Cakes (Kallo Foods)

イギリスの家庭で親しまれているマーマイト。こちらはそのマーマイト味の煎餅です。マーマイトとは、ビールの醸造過程で出る酵母エキスを加工した食品で、1920年の発売以降、100年以上に渡りイギリスの人々に愛され（または嫌われ）続けています。クセが強すぎるその味は、イギリス人の間でも好き嫌いがはっきり分かれるほど。食パンに塗って食べるのが定番ですが、私は苦手な味でした。一方煎餅になると、そのままでは強すぎる味が緩和され、まるで焦がし醤油せんべいのような味に。美味しくいただくことができました。

#10　テトリー・オリジナルティー　Tetley Original Tea (Tetley)

「テトリー」はイギリスはもちろん、世界的に名が知れている紅茶ブランドです。この「Tetley Original Tea」は世界各国の厳選した茶葉をブレンドしたブラックティーです。雑味のないシンプルな味わいで「Great Taste」の一つ星を獲得しています。特に華やかさはない至って普通のパッケージデザインで、個包装もされていませんが、イギリス人の紅茶ライフを支える、まさに「最高の普通」を表している商品だと感じます。

I became acquainted with a British friend a few years ago, and she suggested that we do a snack exchange. Since then, we have done this 4 times, so, please let me share some British snacks (and tea) along with my comments on them.

1. Jaffa Cakes (McVitie’s)

Jaffa cakes are thin circular ‘cakes’ which look like biscuits, they are sponge cakes with dark crackly chocolate on the top and a tangy orange-flavoured jam inside. It’s arguably my favourite British snack I’ve ever tasted. 
There is a well-known anecdote that Mcvitie’s pleaded to prove that Jaffa cakes are 'cakes’ and not 'biscuits’. Fortunately for Mcvitie’s, they won the court case.

2. Jammie Dodgers (Burton's Biscuit Co)


Jammie Dodgers are a shortcake biscuit with a sticky jam, raspberry-flavoured is their signature. The simplicity of its taste goes well with tea or coffee.


3.  Dairy Milk (Cadbury) 


Dairy milk is a classic milk chocolate bar from Cadbury which has been around for nearly 200 years. To me, I find chocolate bars in the UK are usually too sweet, but to be fair, Dairy Milk doesn't taste overly sweet. I enjoyed its creamy and rich milk flavour.


4. Teacakes（Tunnock’s)

A teacake biscuit is a dome-shaped soft marshmallow on a biscuit base, fully coated in milk chocolate. You can’t go wrong with the combination of chocolate, marshmallow and a biscuit.


5. Creme Egg (Cadbury)


Creme Egg, which has an oval shape wrapped with silver paper, reminds me of the Japanese familiar snack Choco Egg. But, what surprises me is that the chocolate egg is designed to appear as if there is yolk and albumen inside. They are actually made from a confectionery ingredient called, “fondant”. In short, it’s mainly made of sugar, thus it tastes very sweet as you can imagine. (perhaps much sweeter than you think it would be) Regardless of its taste, it might be a good conversational snack.


6. Nakd Peanut Delight Fruit & Nut Bar (Natural Balance Foods)


Nakd Peanut Delight is an organic peanut bar that only contains dates, peanuts and sea salt as ingredients. They have a wide range of flavours and they all have no added sugar. They are suitable for vegans as they are gluten, wheat and dairy free. But, most importantly, it’s tasty.

7. Hand-Cooked Pork Scratchings (Mr Porky) 


It's a fried pork rind snack also known as pork scratchings or pork cracklings. It's safe to say that it's polarising because it has an acquired taste and a unique texture. I personally found it 'moreish', I liked it.

8. Sensations Thai Sweet Chilli Coated Peanuts (Walkers) 


It's a peanut crisp covered with Thai sweet chilli flavoured coating. Honestly, there is nothing new about this type of snack, but it's truly addictive and delicious. On a side note, a Scottish manufacturer of the same name, Walkers, which is well-known for their shortbread or biscuits wrapped in a tartan package design, is a completely different company, so please don’t get confused with them!

9. Marmite Rice Cakes (Kallo Foods)


Marmite is a classic British spread, and this one is a Marmite-flavoured rice cake. Marmite is a savoury food spread made of yeast, which has been loved or hated by British people for more than 100 years. They say the intense taste divides even people from the UK. Typically, you can spread it on toast, but it doesn’t do it for me. However, when it comes to rice cakes, they make a mild taste and become like soy sauce rice cakes, which unexpectedly, I really enjoyed.


10. Tetley Original Tea (Tetley)


Tetley is a globally acclaimed tea brand, and not just known in the UK. Tetley Original Tea is black tea whose leaves are carefully picked from Africa and then blended, they won 1-star in Great Taste Award 2018 for their pure flavour. They don't have a gorgeous package design and the tea bags are not packed individually, but I presume that this product describes a staple of British people's tea drinking life.
