I heard that a talent had rushed into an emergency hospital when she was in Spain. It was Naomi Trauden who did so. She gives the details on her blog, including the picture of her swollen and red face. She suddenly had an anaphylactoid reaction. But she managed to recover from it.
That reminded me of my mother-in-law. When I and my family lived in the Netherlands, she and her husband had come to the country once to see us. Probably, they seemed to have been concerned about how we were living there. They stayed with us for a week. During their stay, we visited a lot of famous sights such as the Het-Loo Palace and Zaanse Schans. They enjoyed their stay very much. At the same time, they seemed relieved to see us enjoying Dutch life.
On the last night of their stay in the Netherlands, we all had dinner at a teppan-yaki restaurant. There, we had an emergency. As we were enjoying the food and wine, my mother-in-law suddenly fell off her chair. She passed out for a while and crouched on the floor. At that moment, I was very upset and did not know what to do. So I took a few deep breaths to pull myself together. Then, I asked the restaurant staff to call an ambulance. Upon arrival, it took my mother-in-law and me to a hospital. In the hospital, my mother-in-law was seen by a doctor and then, she fully regained consciousness. I was told by the doctor that she had drunk so much wine that she seemed to have fainted. I was very relieved that she was not in a serious condition, and we came home.
The next day, she fully recovered as if nothing had happened the day before. That day, she and her husband took a flight to Japan and arrived safely.
This was the first and last I went to an emergency hospital abroad. Looking back, it was a valuable experience, but I wish that I would not rush to any emergency hospital in or out of Japan.
In the experience, I have one thing I have never forgotten. When my wife’s mother and I were in the Dutch hospital, I saw the doctor wearing wooden shoes. I was very surprised to see that because I had never expected wooden shoes to be in use in everyday life. I thought of wooden shoes as a Dutch souvenir.

　この話を聞いて、義理のお母さんのことを思い出しました。ボクたちがオランダに住んでいた時に、妻の両親が、一度だけオランダに来たことがありました。きっと、どんな生活をしているのか心配だったのだと思います。1週間くらいの滞在していました。滞在中は、ヘットロー宮殿やザーンセスカンスなどの観光地を訪れました。オランダでの滞在は気に入ってもらえたようです。また、ボクたちがオランダの生活をた楽しんでいるのを見て安心したようです。
　滞在最後の夜に、鉄板焼きレストランに行きました。そこで、緊急事態が起こりました。みんなで料理を舌鼓しながら、ワインを飲んでいた時ででした。突然、義母が椅子から転げ落ちたのです。そして、一瞬、気を失ってしまいました。ボクは、一瞬、困惑して、どうすればいいのかわかりませんでしたが、数回深呼吸して冷静さを取り戻しました。そして、レストランのスタッフに救急車を手配してもらい、病院に駆け込みました。病院でお医者さんに診てもらったところ、意識も戻りました。お医者さんからは、原因はワインの飲みすぎと言われました。なにはともあれ、深刻じゃなかったので安心しました。その後、お母さんと一緒に家に戻りました。
　翌日、お母さんは、前日に何事もなかったように、元気でした。そして、その日に、日本に帰る便に乗り、無事、帰国しました。海外で救急病院に駆け込むのは、これが最初で最後です。今思うと、貴重な体験でしたが、二度とこんなことが起こらないよう、願うばかりです。
　この体験の中で、今で忘れられないことがあります。駆け込んだオランダの病院で、お医者さんが木靴を履いていたのです。木靴が日常生活で使わているとは思いもしませんでした。木靴は、オランダのおみやげぐらにしか考えていませんでした。
