It is no doubt that Sanma san is a genius for small talk. He invented a small talk TV show. It is ‘Sanma no Manma’ in which he talks with guests about whatever comes to their minds. The show was born thanks to two comedians. One of them was Shofukutei Matsunosuke, the master of Sanma san. Long before, he had told Sanma san how great and fun it would have been to have small talks in a TV programme. And he brought it to life on TV. When he was in the TV programme ‘Wareatte Iitomo!’, he asked the director for a segment to have small talks with Tamori san as the partner. The partner was another king of comedians and emceed the programme. Sanma san had good chemistry with hiｍ. He was sure that he could create something new with Tamori san. As he expected, it was a big success.
Then, a director happened to watch the segment and planned a programme in which Sanma san had a small talk with a guest. It was ‘Sanma no Manama’.

　さんまさんの雑談力の高さは誰もが認めるところだど思います。さんま山は、雑談だけの番組を創ったかたです。それが「さんまのまんま」です。さんまさんとゲストとの何気ない話がめちゃくちゃ面白いです。この番組の誕生のきっかけを作ったのが、松之助師匠とタモリさんです。松之助師匠は、さんまさんに「雑談で番組や舞台ができたらすごいことだ」とおっしゃっていたそうです。そして、さんまさんはこれをテレビで実現します。フジテレビの番組「笑っていいとも」に出演しいていたときに、ディレクターにタモリさんと二人で雑談するコーナーをつくるよう頼んだのです。タモリさんもお笑い王と言われ、この番組の司会をしていました。さんまさんは、タモリさんと相性も良かったので、タモリさんとなら、新しいモノを生み出せると確信していました。そして、想像通り、大成功をおさめます。
　その時、あるディレクターがこのコーナーを見ていて、さんまさんの雑談番組を企画したそうです。それが、「さんまのまんま」です。
　この話は、雑誌「SWITCH」でさんまさんが語られています。話も興味深く、さんまさんがタモリさんに深く敬意を払っておられるのがよくわかります。
