Last week, I suddenly got a call from my colleague. It surprised me since I did not expect it at all. The call was to ask me to build a system for inventory control of materials. He has used a spreadsheet software, MS Excel, to manage the inventories. So I asked him to send me the file and looked at it carefully. As a result, I found that the file had used few functions and needed to make a lot of copies and pastes to sum up the data. I could not see how it could be made more efficient without making significant changes. So I created a new file. It was totally different from his, but allowed him to do the same things more efficiently.
The work made me realise that Excel was not an appropriate tool for inventory control. Instead, I knew that I should have used a database software, such as MS Access. Excel required me to use a lot of functions to create the file and made the file complicated and not easy to use. But Access will do not require such things and allow me to create a file that will be simpler and easier to use. But I had no choice but Excel because my colleague or his colleagues did not know about Access.
The work made me find a bit strange thing, too. Between my colleague, his colleagues and I, I was the oldest. The oldest was the one who knew the most about Excel and Access. My colleague and his colleagues have used Excel on a daily basis, but they know about it less than me. Usually, the younger you are, the better you should know about IT tools. But they are not. They are unwilling to study Excel on their own.

　先週、突然、会社の同僚から電話がありました。予期していなかったので、驚きでした。話は、原材料の在庫管理の仕組みを作って欲しいということでした。いまは、マイクロソフトのエクセルを使っているとのことだったので、そのファイルを送ってもらい、点検しました。その結果、ファイルには関数がほとんど使われておらず、集計にするにはコピペを繰り返すしかない仕組みになっていました。この仕組みを大幅に変えることなく、効率化する案が浮かばなかったので、新たなファイルを作りました。仕組みは大幅に変わりましたが、より効率的に使える仕組みにしました。
この仕組み作りを通して、エクセルは、在庫管理には向かないことがよくわかりました。エクセルではなく、アクセスなどのデータベースソフトを使った方がいいこともわかりました。エクセルだと、多くの関数を使うためファイルが複雑化し使いにくくなりますが、アクセスだと、よりシンプルで使いやすいファイルが作成できます。でも、アクセスを使うわけにいかなかったのです。理由は、同僚と彼の同僚の誰もアクセスのことを知らなかったからです。
　この取り組みを通して、もう一つ不思議なことがありました。この取り組みに関係しているのは、ボク、同僚と彼の仲間なのですが、その中でボクが年長者でした。そのボクがエクセルやアクセスのことを一番わかっているのです。同僚と彼の仲間もエクセルは毎日のようにつかっています。でも、エクセルのことをボクより理解していません。普通は、若ければ若いほど、ITツールに関しては、知っているはずなのです。でも、彼らは違いました。エクセルを勉強する気がないようです。
