When I read several articles about 'sunflowers', I thought of them. They have always reminded me of Spain. This is because I saw a lot of sunflowers there. But they were not real, but on product labels. About 25 years ago, I went to Spain a lot on business. When I was in Spain, I always went to supermarkets to do market research and found a lot of big bottles of sunflower oil. They always had big sunflowers on their labels. The bottles gave me the image that Spain was the country of sunflowers.
When I went to Spain on business, in most cases, I was in Barcelona. But I had been to Seville in the south of Spain several times. Seville is the capital of the region of Andalusia which has a lot of sunflower farms. I went there to run a stand at an exhibition of products for maths education. It was sweltering days in July and I suffered from the heat waves. I began to set up the stand in the afternoon of the day before the exhibition opened. I expected the air conditioning to work in the exhibition hall, but it did not. It was so hot and humid that it was as if I would have been in a sauna bath. At that moment, I really understood that we needed siestas to live in Spain. I should have begun to set up the stand after the sunset. In the end, I left the city without seeing any natural sunflowers.
The heat wave exhausted me extremely, but the strong sun was the source of the sunflowers' growth. It looked as if the sun would have sucked my energy and injected it into sunflowers.

　「ひまわり」の記事を読んで、それについて考えました。ぼくの中では、ひまわりと言えば、スペインが思い浮かびます。多分、スペインでひまわりをたくさん見たからだと思います。でも、見たひまわりは本物ではなく、商品ラベルに描かれていたものでした。約25年前、スペインに度々出張しました。出張した時は、市場調査のためいつもスーパーを訪れました。その時に、ひまわり油の大きなボトルが沢山ならんでいました。そして、そのボトルのラベルには大きな「ひまわり」がありました。これで、スペインはひまわりの国というイメージを持つようになったのだと思います。
　スペインの出張先は、大半が、バルセロナでしたが、南部のセビリアにも出張したこともあります。セビリアは、ひまわり畑が広がるアンダルシア州の州都です。ここで開催される数学教育関連商品の展示会に出展するために出張しました。7月のくそ暑い時で、熱波に苦しめられました。日中に会場のブースの設営を始めました。会場はてっきりエアコンが効いているものだと思いたのですが、大間違いでした。エアコンが切られていたのです。会場はすごく蒸し暑く、まるでサウナ風呂に入っているようでした。この時に、スペインではシエスタが必要だと実感しました。スタンドの設営は、日が沈んでから始めるべきでした。
　この強い日差しと熱さでボクはヘトヘトでしたが、ひまわりはこのおかげで伸びていました。それはまるで、太陽がボクのエネルギーを吸い取り、それをひまわりに注入しているかのようでした。
