About a week ago I went to a talk show which was organized by my town. It was about how important it is still to read books in this day and age. The speaker was a journalist, Akira Iegami. He is also very popular for his TV programmes.

The following is the summary of the talk show:

– Reading books is very helpful for us to develop a culture.
– Reading books may not be immediately of use, but it will be in the long run.
– It is effective to read books with a purpose.
– It is ideal for a reader to summarise to someone what he or she has read, and the reader can understand it more deeply. Ikegami-san is always impressed by his partner, Teruyuki Tsuchida, who has appeared on a TV show together. The partner has always understood and remembered well what he has learnt from the show. So he was asked by Ikegami-san why he did so well. Then, he replied that he always explained what he had learnt to his associates.
– Some science universities have recently begun to understand how important it is for science students to learn liberal arts. And now they have provided courses for liberal arts.
– Ikegami-san had read about 300 books a year before he got busy. Even being busy now, he reads 70 books a year. He has learnt a lot of things from books and the books have been a gate to broaden his knowledge and culture.
– He has also studied English very hard. When he was a reporter for a police beat, he used to wait for an acquainted police officer on a street. During that time, he used to read NHK’s English textbook.

I enjoyed the talk show very much and have been tempted to read books more and more.

１週間ほど前、町が主催するトークショーに行ってきました。 「この時代に本を読むことがいかに重要であるか」について語られました。 講演者はジャーナリストの池上彰さんでした。 池上さんは、テレビ番組でも非常に人気がある方です。トークショーの概要は以下の通りです。
– 本を読むことは教養を身に着けるのに役立ちます。
– 本を読むことはすぐには役に立たないかもしれませんが、長期的な目で見ると役立ちます。
– 目的を持って本を読むことは効果的です。
– 読者が自分の読んだ内容を誰かに要約すると、読者も理解が深まり理想的です。 池上さんは、テレビ番組で一緒に出演したことのある相方の土田晃之さんにいつも感心しています。 土田さんは番組から学んだことをいつも、よく理解し、よく覚えているそうです。池上さんが、その理由を聞いてみると、土田さんは自分が学んだことをいつも仲間に説明しているそうです。
– 一部の理系の大学は最近、理系学生がリベラルアーツを学ぶことの重要性を理解し始めています。 そして今、リベラルアーツの授業を開設しているところもあります。
– 池上さんは忙しくなる前は、年間300冊ほどの本を読まれていました。 忙しくなった今でも、年間70冊の本を読んでいるそうです。本から多くのことを学び、池上さんにとって、本は、知識と教養を広げる窓口になっています。
– 池上さんは、英語も一生懸命勉強しました。 警察の担当記者だった頃、知り合いの刑事を路上で待っていた時、NHKの英語のテキストをよく読んでいたそうです。

トークショーがとても楽しく、もっともっと読書がしたくなりました。
