1973年に結成されたNew OrleansのMardi Gras Indiansの部族であるWild Magnoliasのビッグ・チーフ（酋長であったTheodore "Bo" Dollisと彼の幼馴染みでThe Golden Eaglesのビッグ・チーフであったMonk Boudreauxを中心に結成されたファンク・グループ／R&Bグループ。Indians部族としての伝統をしっかりと継承しつつ、伝統的にはドラムと掛け声だけで演奏されてきたMardi Gras Indiansのサウンドを初期から導入しファンクの源流とも言われる交錯するリズムを展開。ファンクに仕立て上げたそのグルーヴ感のあるサウンドが評価を受ける。
1974年、フランスのBarclaからデビュー・アルバムThe Wild Magnoliasをリリースした。このアルバムはWillie Tee(key.)、Snooks Eaglin(gt.)らニューオーリンズのミュージシャンがバックにつき、非常にファンキーな作品に仕上がっている。"Iko Iko"、"聖者の行進 (Saints)"などの有名なニューオーリンズ・ナンバーに加え、"Smoke My Peace Pipe (Smoke It Right)"、"Two Way Pak E Way"など、このバンドの定番レパートリーとなった楽曲が収録された。シングル・カットされ、R&Bチャートの74位を記録している1975年には、ほぼ同じバンド・メンバーでセカンド・アルバムThey Call Us Wildをリリースした。しかしこの後、彼らは暫く新作から遠ざかる。次の彼らの作品は、1988年のI'm Back at Carnival Time!まで待たねばならなかった。久々のこの作品でもプロフェッサー・ロングヘア "Tipitina"やアル・ジョンソンの"Carnival Time"などニューオーリンズ色の強いナンバーを演奏し、相変わらず元気なところを聴かせている。本作『They Call Us Wild』（1975年）は、1stアルバム『The Wild Magnolias』（1974年）と並ぶレア・グループの人気作品MembersはTheodore Emile "Bo" Dollis、Joseph Pierre "Monk" Boudreaux、"Gator June" Johnson, Jr.、"Crip" Adams、"Quarter Moon" Tobias、"Gate" Johnson、"Bubba" Scott、James Smothersさらに前作同様にアレンジを手掛けるWilson Turbinton（Willy Tee）（key、syn）をはじめ、、Earl Turbinton（as、ss）、Guitar June（g）、Erving Charles（b）、Alfred Roberts（conga）、Larry Panna（ds）、Snooks Eaglin（g）、Julius Farmer（b）といったミュージシャンがバックを務めています。プロデュースはPhilippe Rault
