He is recognized as a leading performer in both fields, and the breadth and depth of his repertoire is astonishing. He can truly be described as a person with a wide variety of talents, like a versatile artist from the Renaissance era.

Barenboim was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1942. His parents were Jewish pianists who gave him an early musical education. He first appeared on stage at the age of five and made his concert debut at the age of seven. He then furthered his studies in Paris and London, and already in his teens he achieved fame as a world-class pianist.

He was especially good at works by German-Austrian composers such as Beethoven, Schubert, and Brahms. He recorded Beethoven's complete piano sonatas and piano concertos, which received high acclaim. He also demonstrated great skill in chamber music and lieder accompaniment.

He began working as a conductor in the 1960s. He started by conducting his own piano concertos and chamber music, but he gradually moved on to conducting operas and symphonies, and in 1975 he became music director of the Orchestre de Paris. 

In 1992, He was appointed general music director of the Berlin State Opera, a historic event. Because Barenboim was Jewish and a descendant of people persecuted by the Nazis during World War II. From 2000, He became the lifetime chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Berlin, and has become a major influence in the opera world.
