Another new month has started. It's May. 
Some may be enjoying the long holidays if possible. My husband and I have holidays as the calendar, so we're having our ordinary days on the weekdays.

This is my article about weekly questionどこ from 英語手帳 2024. The theme in May is "Post-COVID travels" （コロナ後の旅行事情）.

Weekly question: Are you confident to approach tourists in Japan?

It depends. If tourists look like they need help, I would approach and ask what they need. So, I am confident to approach.

However, I won't approach myself. One main reason is that the foreign tourists may be just like my husband and I. I mean that not all foreign tourists are visiting from other countries. Nationalities may be different, but they may be living in Japan and traveling domestically. So, they might not even need help in English. English is spoken widely in the world, but that doesn't mean that everyone can speak English, or want to speak English.

If I see tourists who need help, I would ask first if English is OK or not. 
"Is English OK?", or
"Do you speak English?" 

If you would like to try approaching tourists in Japan, I would recommend you to ask like above first. Japanese might be even better to communicate. When we go into a restaurant that we often visit in Osaka, the staff asks us, "Where are you from?" .
We answer a place in Japan, of course. And the staff sometimes looks surprised. 

As you can imagine, everyone has different opinions. This is just my idea, so that's how I think and would approach tourists.

日本にいる観光客に声をかける自信はありますか？

時と場合によって、声をかけるか、考えます。本当に困ってそうなら、声をかけるので、自信はあるということになりますね。

でも、自分から声をかけることってほとんどしてません。一番の理由は、私と夫のように、日本在住で旅行してたり、たまたまよく出かける場所が観光地に近かったりすることもあるからです。国籍や見た目が違っても、英語が必要な場合とそうでない場合があります。英語は、確かに世界でよく話されている言語ですが、英語が話せる人ばかりでもないし、英語を話したくないと思ってる方もいると思います。

本当に助けが必要で、声をかける場合は、いつも英語が話せるかどうか、英語を使っていいかを相手に確認します。日本語でも対応できたり、日本語が話したいと思ってる観光客もいるかもしれません。

私と夫が、慣れてる大阪でレストランに入っても、店員さんから、「どこ（国）から来られたんですか？」とよく聞かれます。住んでる日本の県をいうと、「へぇ～」という感じで、どうも期待と違ったような印象を受けることがあります。店員さんは、興味本位で聞いて来られて、悪気は全くないと思います。別に私も夫も、慣れっこなので、それに対してどう思うとかもないです。ただ、なんとも言えない微妙な空気になるのは、なんでかなぁ（笑）

外国人に話しかける機会があれば、長く日本で住んでる人もいるんだと、少し考えていただけると嬉しいです。夫も、日本在住暦15年以上経ってたことに、計算して驚きました。
