Above & BeyondやJoris  Voornを筆頭にCassian、Pete Tong, Diplo、RÜFÜS DU SOL, Armin Van Buuren, Tiesto,  Meduzaなどジャンルを超えた多くのエレクトロミュージック界のトップアーティスト達からの支持を獲得しているロンドン出身のDJ / プロデューサーMarsh。

UKの人気レーベルAnjunadeepにおいて2枚のアーティストアルバムと多くのシングルをリリースし、発表した作品の多くが数百万単位のストリーミング再生を記録。

この3年ほどの間に多くのパーティーやフェスティバルでヘッドライナーを務めるなどスターDJの仲間入りを果たしたMarshだが、2023年5月2日から大阪、静岡、東京の3都市で開催される初のJapan Tourを目前に控え、最新アルバム"ENDLESS"の制作エピソードやツアーでの楽しみ、日本への思いなど、日本のAnjunadeepとMarshファンの為に独占インタビューに応じてくれた。

こんにちは、皆さん、インタビューに時間を割いていただきありがとうございました！日本で君たちに会うのが待ちきれないよ。

- 最新アルバム”ENDLESS”について-

まずは最新アルバム"ENDLESS"聴かせていただいています！
このアルバムについての話を是非お聞かせください。

アルバムバージョンは48分という丁度良い長さで散歩や移動中に何度も繰り返し楽しんでいますよ。

今回のアルバム制作で特にこだわった点、聴いてほしい点などありましたら是非教えてください。

アルバムへの嬉しいお言葉ありがとうございます。

この質問に具体的な答えがあればいいのですが…
正直なところ、私は作曲行う際に特定の文脈やアルバムの内容に合わせるために作曲したりするのではなく、ただ流れに身を任せて、その瞬間に私にとってふさわしいと感じる曲を制作しています。

とはいえ、ここ数年は子供の頃にダンスミュージックに夢中になった頃の音やヴァイブスを組み合わせることにとてもインスパイアされていますね。

初期のトランスミュージック、ドラムンベース、そしてハッピーハードコアのヴァイブス。

これらのインスピレーションを私が今日好きなディープ・プログレッシブ・ミュージックと融合させることで自分自身の "MARSH" サウンドを見つけようと試みているんですよ。

- アルバムタイトル"ENDLESS"に込められたメッセージ-

"ENDLESS"というタイトルに込められた意味や、その名前を思いついた経緯などを教えていただければ幸いです。

MARSH
表面的な話ですが、パンデミック後にクラブに復帰することが許されてから、今かなりの頻度で週末にツアーに出ています。

果てしない空港、果てしない飛行機、果てしない新しいホテルの部屋....それらは果てしないツアーのように感じられるのです。

ツアーは間違いなく大変で、自分の限界まで追い込まれていることもあります。が、誤解しないで欲しいのですが、私はこれらのすべてにとても感謝しています。

今回のアルバムのアートワークは飛行機の窓から眼下に広がる果てしなく続くような風景を眺めている時にインスピレーションを受けたものとなっています。

より深いレベルで話すと、私のツアーに加えてアルバムを書いている間、妻のトラベルナース（様々な場所に出張する看護師）のキャリアのため、3ヶ月ごとに新しい街に引っ越さなければなりませんでした。

私はアパートのキッチン、リビングルームの机、ホテルの部屋など、あらゆる場所で楽曲制作することを学ぶ必要がありました。

そして、それらの引っ越しを繰り返す中で「家とは何か？」という問いについて少し考えるようになりました。

家とは、一定期間住んだ場所でしょうか？
それとも家族や友人がいる場所の事でしょうか？

そういう事を考えていくうちに私は死後の世界を考え始めたりもしました。

死後に、Home（ホーム）と言う名の永遠に居れる場所はあるのか？まさにエンドレスホーム（永遠の居場所）は存在するのか。

その「永遠の家」の意味について、私の信仰による考えも説明させてください。

イエス・キリストの言葉は、死後の世界に無限の故郷（家）が私たちを待っていることを保証し、人々に希望を与えてくれます。

聖書に書かれている約2,000年前に起こったイエス・キリストの死と復活を信じるなら、イエスの父（神）が私たちを浄化し、過去、現在、未来の私たちがした事のすべて許し、罪や罪悪感、恥といったものから完全に解放された、全く新しい人生を与えてくれるとも教えられました。

それは、私たちを知り、愛してくださる創造主（神）と再びつながることを意味し、私たち全員を痛みも苦しみもない「永遠の家」である「天国」へと招いてくれるのです。

それが今回のタイトル「ENDLESS」（永遠の）に込められた、私自身の意味とメッセージです。

- ワールドツアーについて-

ツアーの話で言えばMARSHさんは今、まさにワールドツアーの真っ最中でアメリカからヨーロッパ、東欧、アジアなど世界各地を回っていますよね！

各地で体験したエピソードや、その国に行った時の楽しみやルーティン（必ずやること）などがあれば教えてください。

MARSH
ツアーはとても濃厚です！

すでに手遅れになってから気づいたのですが、あまりにも多くの公演依頼に「イエス」と言ってしまったので2023年の最初の6カ月間、週末の休みが取れませんでした...

そのツアーの中で一番気に入っている事は、親友になった人たちに会う機会を与えてくれたことです。

ほとんどの都市で素晴らしい友人たちのグループが増え、ショーの前にビール工場やレストランで彼らと再会するのが大好きです。

また、楽しいアフターパーティもいくつかあり、Jody Wisternoffとは日が昇るまでずっと起きていたこともありましたね！

睡眠は私にとって神聖なもので、健康で長く続けるためには優先順位をつけなければなりません。

残念ながら、私が訪れるほとんどの国や都市ではパーティー当日の午後に到着し、ショーの準備をし、ショーを行い、眠り、起きて空港に駆け込み、その繰り返しでした。その為、観光に費やす時間やエネルギーがあまりありませんでした。

とはいえ、ニューヨーク、ロス、ロンドンでは猫カフェで数人のファンとの特別な出会いの機会を設けました。これはとても楽しいことでした。

新しい人に会い、質問に答え、写真を撮り、猫と遊ぶ時間は私の楽しみです。

- 日本に来たら…-

多くの日本のファンやパーティー関係者は、あなたが日本に来たときに何に興味を持つか、とても興味を持っていると思います。

日本に来たらやってみたいこと、行ってみたい場所などはありますか？

MARSH
今回初めて日本を訪れるのでとても興奮しています。ネットで写真を見るととても美しい国だと思いますね。また、私はすでに日本食の大ファンなので、この国の料理をすべて試してみたいと思っています。

今回のツアーには2人の友人が参加するのですが、彼らは私たちがやろうとしている観光的なことの膨大なアジェンダを計画してくれています。

例えば、任天堂ランドに行ったり、富士山を見たり、和牛のステーキを食べたり、相撲を見に行ったり...

もちろん、街を散策して写真を撮ったりもする予定です！

- About the composition of this album...

MARSH
I've been listening to the latest album "ENDLESS" quite a lot!

The album version is 48 minutes long, and I enjoy listening to it over and over again when I'm walking or traveling.

What did you pay particular attention to in the making of this album, and are there any particular points that you want people to listen to?

Hi guys, thank you for taking the time to interview me! I can’t wait to finally see Japan and meet you guys. Thanks for the kind words on the album. I wish I had a specific answer to this question but the honest truth is that when I sit down to write, I’m not writing or composing music to fit any specific context or album but I kind of just go with the flow and whatever is feeling right to me in that moment. With that said, for the last few years I have been really inspired by combining sounds and vibes that got me into dance music back in my childhood. Vibes from early trance music, drum and bass, even some happy hardcore. I’ve been trying to blend these inspirations with what I love today about deep and progressive music and then I sort of find my own ‘Marsh’ sound. 

 - The message of the title ENDLESS-

MARSH
I would be very happy if you could tell us about the meaning behind the title ENDLESS and how you came up with the name.

At a surface level, I have been on tour now, pretty much every weekend since we were allowed to be back in clubs after the pandemic. It feels like an endless tour with endless airports, endless planes, endless new hotel rooms. Don’t get me wrong, I’m super grateful for all of this but it’s definitely been a lot and pushed me to my limits. 

The album artwork is inspired by all the times I find myself gazing out of plane windows looking at the landscapes below which seem to go on endlessly… 

On a deeper level, while writing the album, my wife’s travel nursing career meant that we moved to a new city every three months (on top of all the touring). I had to learn to write music from apartment kitchens, living room desks, hotel rooms, basically wherever it was possible. But all the moving made me think a little bit about the question “what is home?”. Is home somewhere you have lived for a certain amount of time? Or is it where your family and friends are? And then I started thinking about what happens after life? Is there a home we will go to for eternity? - An endless home. 

My faith in the words of Jesus assures me and gives me hope that there IS an endless home waiting for us after this life. Jesus taught that if we trust in his death and resurrection that happened 2000 years ago, his Father (God) will wash us clean, forgive us for anything we’ve done, past, present and future and give us a brand new life that is totally free from sin, guilt and shame. We get to reconnect with our creator who desires a relationship with us, knows us and loves us. AND God invites us all to join him in Heaven, an endless home where there is no more pain and suffering.

- About the world tour...

MARSH
you are in the middle of a world tour right now, and have been traveling from the US to Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia and other places!

Please tell us about any episodes you've experienced in each place, or any fun or routine (must-do) things you do when you visit a country.

The tour has been intense. I realized, when it was already too late, that I had said yes to so many shows that I wouldn’t be getting a weekend off for the first 6 months of 2023… My favorite thing about touring is that it has given me an opportunity to meet people that have become best friends. In most cities, I now have growing groups of awesome friends and I love to reconnect with them at breweries, restaurants before shows. There has also been a few fun afterparties thrown in, a couple with Jody Wisternoff where we’ve stayed up way past the sun coming up, but it’s super super rare if you get me to stay out much past my set time! Sleep is sacred to me and I have to prioritize it to stay healthy and keep doing this for a long time. Unfortunately, for most countries and cities I visit, I land in the afternoon, prepare for the show, play the show, sleep and wake up to rush to the airport to do this all over again. So I don’t get much time or energy to spend on sightseeing / doing tourist things. That said, In NYC, LA and London we organized a special meet and greet opportunity with a few fans at cat cafés. These were a lot of fun. A time to meet new people, answer questions, take photos and play with cats.

- When you come to Japan...

MARSH
I think a lot of Japanese fans and promoters are very interested in what you will be interested in when you visit Japan 

Are there any things you would like to do or places you would like to visit when you come to Japan?

I’m super excited to see Japan for the first time. The country looks beautiful when I look at all the pictures online. I’m already a huge fan of Japanese cuisine so I’m excited to try everything in the homeland. I actually have two friends joining me on this tour and they have planned out a huge agenda of touristy things we are going to attempt to do. To mention a few, I think there’s plans to go to Nintendo Land, see Mount Fuji, eat some Wagyu steak, maybe go to see Sumo wrestling… and of course, explore the cities, walk around and take photos!

- Finally, do you have a message for your Japanese fans?

 MARSH
I can’t wait to meet you guys! I hope the shows are super memorable for you. Thanks for supporting, buying tickets, sharing my music with your friends - it goes such a long way. And hopefully I’ll make some new friends that I can catch up with on my next tour here!!
