今回は食品ロス問題とみなさんが取り組める解決方法について紹介したいと思います！

＜食品ロス問題＞
食品ロス：本来食べられるのに捨てられてしまう食品のこと。事業系食品ロスと家庭系食品ロスに分けられる。
現状：年間約512万トン、1人当たり毎日お茶碗1杯分を捨てている。（日本）年間13億トン（世界）
影響：食品を処分する際に温室効果ガスが発生し環境負荷がかかる。今後の世界人口増加に伴い食糧不足になる可能性がある。

以上のような食品ロス問題の解決のためにできることはなんでしょうか？
それがコンポストです！

＜コンポストとは＞
コンポストとはどんなもので、どのような特徴があるのでしょうか？
コンポストとは、オーガニック食品の食べ残しなどをリサイクルして堆肥に変えることです。
たとえば、オレンジの皮、草、たねなど、どんなオーガニック食品でもコンポストに使えます。
オーガニック食品とは、肥料とか人工的な薬を使っていない食品のことです。

コンポストに入れることができるもの：
食べ物や野菜の食べ残し（オレンジの皮など）
ほとんどの雑草
コーヒーの粉、ペーパーフィルター（コーヒーメーカーに入れる茶色いカップのようなもの）
紙でできたティーバッグ(タグなし)

コンポストに入れてはいけないもの：
乳製品(チーズ)
オイル・グリース
ペットのふん（猫用の砂）
果物や野菜に貼ってあるタグ

＜コンポストのメリット＞
コンポストをすることで自分にも地球にもたくさんのメリットがあります。自分・家庭からみたメリット、地域・地域環境からみたメリットの二つの観点から紹介しようと思います。

①自分・家庭でのメリット
☆部屋から生ごみの匂いがなくなり、生ごみを捨てる手間がなくなる。
　＋ゴミが減るのでゴミ袋代が節約できる！
☆できた堆肥は家庭菜園や園芸に使用できる。
自分の庭やテラスで植物栽培することで心の癒しにも！自分で堆肥から作った野菜や果物は格別です。

②地域・地球環境でのメリット
☆ゴミが減り自治体が焼却処分するときの手間や燃料、費用が削減されます。
　＋ゴミの焼却が減るため二酸化炭素の排出量が削減されます！
☆堆肥を学校や農業などの地域に還元することで地産地消の野菜作りに活かすことができる。

＜コンポストのデメリット＞
たくさんのメリットがある一方デメリットもあります。

①悪臭が発生する可能性がある。
生ごみを使用しているので水分や生肉、魚類が多すぎるなど間違った条件で作ってしまった場合悪臭が発生してしまうこともあります。
↳悪臭が発生してしまったら生ごみの投入を2～3日休み分解を促すことで改善できます。

②虫が湧いてしまう。
生ごみの中に虫の卵があったり作ったコンポストを放置してしまうと虫が湧いてしまいます。
↳自分で容器や基材を用意する場合は、虫や卵が入っていないか確認しましょう。コンポストにカバーをかけることで、外から虫が入ってくるのを防げます。また虫が発生してしまったら、米ぬかやてんぷら油、糖分を入れて分解し、温度を上げることで卵を死滅させることができます。それでもまだ虫がいたら、ダンボールコンポストの場合は中身を全て透明のビニール袋に移し天日干しにします。日差しが強ければうじ虫は１日で死滅します。

• What is food loss and waste?

It refers to food that is thrown away even though still edible. 

• Facts

In Japan, around 5.12 million tons of food is lost and wasted annually, which is equal to you throwing away a  bowl of rice every day.
Globally, around 1.3 billion tons of food is lost and wasted.

• Why is food loss and waste a big problem?

It has a huge environmental impact and it is also a social justice issue.

You want to combat food loss and waste but have no idea what to do? Then, why don’t you try composting?

<What is composting and how does it work?>
Composting is the activity of recycling organic food scraps to turn into soil. Any organic foods, such as orange peels, grass, and seeds can also be used for composting.
Organic foods are food that aren’t treated with any man-made materials, such as fertilizer and pesticides. 
Things you can add to compost bins: 

• Food and vegetable scraps (Ex. Orange peels, etc.)

• Most plants and yard trims

• Coffee grinds and paper filters (brown cup-like things you put in your coffee machines)

• Paper tea bags (Without any tags)

Things you should avoid putting in compost bins:

• Dairy items (Ex. Cheese)

• Oil and greases

• Pet waste (Cat litter)

• Sticker-tags on fruits and some vegetables

                                                                       
ーAdvantages of composingtー
Composting has a lot of advantages for us and the earth. I’ll introduce “What advantage for us and home” and “What advantage for location and environment”.

①What advantage for us and home
☆There is no smell in our room and we don’t have to throw away raw garbage.
    ＋Less raw garbage so we can save money for garbage bags.
☆The compost can be used for home gardens and gardening.
Gardening is good for your health and the healing of the heart!!

②What advantage for location and environment
☆The amount of garbage is reduced, and the labor, fuel, and costs of incineration by the local government are reduced.
　 ＋also less the CO₂ because it reduces garbage incineration.

☆By returning compost to schools, agriculture, and other areas, it can be used to grow vegetables for local production for local consumption.

ーDisadvantagse of composingtー
Composting has a lot of advantages but not only that.

①Composingt may make a bad smell.
Since raw garbage is used, if you make it under the wrong conditions, such as using too much water, raw meat, or fish, you may get a bad smell.
↳If a foul odor occurs, it can be improved by taking a 2-3 day break from putting garbage in and encouraging decomposition.

②Insects may appear
If there are insect eggs in the garbage or if you leave the compost you made, insects will spring up.
↳If you prepare your own container or base material, make sure there are no insects or eggs in it. Covering your compost bin will prevent insects from entering. Also, if insects do appear, you can add rice bran, tempura oil, and sugar to decompose them and raise the temperature to kill the eggs. If there are still bugs, if you use a cardboard composter, transfer all the contents to a clear plastic bag and dry them in the sun. If the sun is strong, the maggots will die within a day.
