When you're in a group, and you're on tour and strutting on stage and making a fool out of yourself, when you come back, you don't want to go out and go and see a group.
グループでいてツアーやステージで派手に振る舞って、馬鹿みたいになっても、戻ったら他のグループを観に行きたくない。
I should have thought that would have been painfully obvious.

I think the kids do think we're heroes, don't they?

They think we're heroes musically, as opposed to personality-wise, cos we've never really pushed our personalities.

今、理由がわかるでしょ。
When I was in Germany last week, I was doing some interviews, and they were saying that how, as a successful band, could we still live in an impoverished, downtrodden place like Manchester?
先週ドイツにいたとき、インタビューを受けてたんだけど、成功したバンドとしてどうしてマンチェスターみたいな貧しい、取り残された場所に住んでいるのかって言われたんだ。
That's ridiculous, isn't it?
それって馬鹿げてるよね？
I'll tell you what.
何て言おうか。
We're going to explore quite a few myths here.
いくつかの神話を探求しよう。
This is one aspect that I like about Manchester, is that people don't know what's happening.
これはマンチェスターの好きな面の1つで、人々は何が起こっているか分からない。
No, they don't.

It's very important, commercially, industrially.

In something like this, Granada World, how much is a thing like this going to cost?

It's a multi-million pound operation.

And what it's going to do is take everybody through the world in terms of television and films.

The interesting thing about it is that, like you were saying before, there's nowhere like this outside of America.

Now, why does this happen in Manchester, and yet we've still got this image of being the working-class place of the north?

I don't know.

Well, of course, it's the very go-ahead in the north, the very go-ahead in Manchester.

You've got the tourist industry and all the hotels and everything.

Great waterway network.

And we're very friendly.

We've come a long way, maybe we should tell them this, that we've come a long way together.

And yet now we've both done very well.

It's like people don't understand why we stay here.

We love it.

I wouldn't move anywhere else.

Well, apart from the fact that your family's here, it still fulfils everything that we need.

Being outside of the music business is a choice that we made a long time ago by just making it ourselves independently.
音楽業界の外にいるのは、昔から独立して自分たちでやることを選んだからだ。
We had a good Factory, Joy Division, New Order, and luckily we were successful musically.

As long as you've got the music to back it up, you can do what you like.

If your music's no good, we wouldn't have been able to achieve what we have achieved anyway.

The thing is that I live in Manchester.

It's my home.

I just don't feel any need to go anywhere else.

I just think that's a pile of crap that you have to move to London and all that.

It's rubbish.

I prefer to think that the reason why we've become successful is that our music's palatable and you can play it loads and loads of times and not get bored with it.
俺たちが成功した理由は、俺たちの音楽が聞きやすくて、何度も何度も聞いても飽きないってことだと思う。
I'm not very queued up on the business side of things or promotional side of things.
ビジネス面やプロモーション面にはあまり詳しくない。
I'm quite unaware of that side of it.

The Hacienda was another experiment for us, an independent experiment, because we did it ourselves.

And even though...

I mean, I know it's been quite a rocky path, but again, Rob was right, it did work out.

So it's been good because it has worked out.

I think that the Hacienda's been very valuable to Manchester.

I was born in Salford, which is just in a northward direction from here.

It's a bit of a dump.
ちょっとダサいところだね。
It's more of a dump now that they've knocked down the old houses.
古い家が取り壊されてから、もっとダサくなった。
I used to live in a sort of Coronation Street type house and it was great.
俺は「コロネーション・ストリート」みたいな家に住んでいて、楽しかったんだ。
I mean, in those days, you could release a record yourself and press up 3,000, and it did sell quite well.
当時は、自分でレコードをリリースして3,000枚プレスすることができたし、それなりに売れていた。
And because we were playing as well and we got ourselves a live reputation, we thought that we could do it, and so we just went.

I mean, we never envisaged that it'd be as popular as it has been.
これほど人気が出るとは思っていなかったんだけどね。
But, I mean, to me, it's been worthwhile because basically we're the only punk group left, I feel.

All the rest of them have just sold out.

I do live out of Manchester at the moment.
今はマンチェスターの外に住んでいるんだ。
I live on a farm at the moment, but I like going out and going to the cinema and going out to club occasionally and having a few drinks, so I'd rather live inside the city, I think.
たまに飲みに行ったり、映画館に行ったり、クラブに行ったりするのが好きだから、やっぱり都会に住む方がいいと思う。
And I think Manchester is the second best dump to London.
そして、俺はマンチェスターがロンドンに次ぐダサさの都市だと思う。
It's not as much of a dump as Liverpool, not as much of a dump as Birmingham.
リバプールやバーミンガムほどではないけど。
But it's like the second city I always think it is.
でも、俺はいつもマンチェスターを第二の都市だと思っているんだ。
Since the late 70s, which was like a real depressive slump in Manchester, I think a lot of money's come into Manchester.
70年代後半、マンチェスターはかなりの不況だったが、多くのお金がマンチェスターに入ってきたと思う。
And the whole city's building up now, you know.

We've got neon signs now.

Property value's going up, I know that, cos I'm just looking for a house.

And there's a lot of rich people here now.

There's a lot of Southern bastards moving up to Manchester and buying all the houses up.

Well, I mean, I think your perception changes as you get older, as you get richer, as you get poorer, whatever.
まあ、歳をとって、お金持ちになったり、貧しくなったりすると、物の見方が変わってくるだろう。
But, I mean, the thing is, is that I think we've got class, and I think that a lot of other bands haven't.
でも、大事なのは、俺たちには品があるってことだ。他のバンドにはないんだ。
And that's our major forte.

One of the problems in life is you've got to be called something.
人生で問題なのは、何かの名前をつけないといけないことだ。
And, erm, New Order was the best we could come up with in the limited space of time that we had to decide what to call ourselves.
で、ニュー・オーダーというのが、俺たちが自分たちの名前を決めるために限られた時間の中で考え出した最良のものだった。
Could have been The Witch Doctors of Zimbabwe, but there you go.
ジンバブエのウィッチ・ドクターズになるかもしれなかったけどね。
Could have been Sherlock Holmes, even.

I used to live in Manchester when I was about three.
俺は3歳のときにマンチェスターに住んでいた。
You were born here.
ここで生まれたんだ。
I was born here, yeah.
そうだね。
And, erm, when I was a teenager, I used to come and see bands here and go out.
で、ティーンエイジャーの頃は、ここでバンドを観たり、遊びに来たりしてたんだ。
And I used to think the place where we live now was absolutely awful, and I couldn't wait to live in Manchester.
今住んでいるところは本当にひどいと思ってて、マンチェスターに住むのが待ちきれなかったんだ。
But, er, as I get older, I'd rather live outside, I think.
でも、歳をとるにつれて、外に住む方がいいと思うようになった。
I prefer the countryside.
田舎の方がいいな。
There's a farm just a bit up the road.
ちょっと先に農場があるんだ。
There's fields and things like that.
そこには畑とかもある。
You don't tend to expect in the countryside, but I like it like that.
田舎には珍しいことだけど、そういうのが好きだ。
A bit of grass, a few cows.
ちょっとした草地とか、牛とかね。
Well, Barney used to have a motorbike.
バーニーは昔、オートバイを持ってた。
Yes.
そうだね。
I think Peter's more the scrambling.
ピーターはもっとバイクでオフロードを楽しむタイプかな。
Yeah, he used to be into scrambling first, and it sort of grew from there, I think.
そう、最初はオフロードバイクが好きだったんだ。それから徐々に興味が広がったんだろうね。
It's all got a bit smaller, cos he was scrambling Range Rovers originally, but they're a bit expensive.
最初は、レンジローバーでオフロードを楽しんでたんだけど、ちょっと高いからね。
Now he's got his own little scrambling bike.
今は自分専用の小さなオフロードバイクがあるんだ。
We're approaching Salford, which is where Peter and Bernard...
これから、ピーターとバーナードが生まれ育ったソールフォードに向かってるんだ。
I don't know.
わからないね。
Born and bred Salford lads.
生まれ育ったソールフォードの男たちだね。
Over the Salford Jets, I suppose.
ソールフォード・ジェッツの向こう側かな。
It's just down this road, I suppose.
この道を下っていくんだろうね。
Well, ours used to be rows and rows of streets, but it was quite good, cos it was like little street communities.
昔は、たくさんの通りがあったけど、それぞれに小さなコミュニティができていたんだ。
Like Coronation Street, weren't they?
コロネーション・ストリートみたいな感じだったね。
And the road where we lived, there were, like, two up and two down, and then you'd straddle on the other side as the road prefabs were, which were, like, prefabricated buildings during the war.
俺たちが住んでいた道は、上下二階建ての家が並んでいて、道路を挟んだ向かい側には戦時中に建てられたプレハブの家があったんだ。
Basically, me mum and dad took me round Moss Side and Old Trafford and said, oh, that's where you was born and all this lot, and it's completely different.
基本的に、親が俺をモス・サイドやオールド・トラッフォードに連れて行って、「ここで生まれたんだ」とか言ってたけど、全然違うんだ。
I don't recognise anything.
何もかもが変わっていて、何も分からないんだ。
It's a dirty dirt bike.

Do you use it for racing, or...?
それでレースに使ったりするの？
No, I don't have the time these days, unfortunately.
いや、最近は時間がなくてね、残念ながら。
Much as I'd like to, but I'm not sure I'd stand up to a race at my age.
できればやりたいけど、俺の年齢ではレースに耐えられるかどうか分からないんだ。
I'm sure that would be embarrassing.
恥ずかしいことになるかもしれないね。
