Every year on the 8th of March, the world comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day. But do you know the meaning behind this special day? And how it has come to be? Let’s find the answers to these questions, shall we?

What is International Women’s Day?

International Women's Day (IWD) is a worldwide event that honors women's social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. The day also serves as a call to action for achieving gender parity. Globally, there is a lot of activity that joins people together to celebrate women's accomplishments, or to march for women's equality.

International Women's Day (IWD) is one of the most important days of the year for celebrating women's accomplishments, raising awareness about gender equality, lobbying for accelerated gender parity, and raising funds for female-focused charities.

History of International Women’s Day

Let’s trace it back to the first wave of feminism, when women’s movements first emerged out of an environment of urban industrialism and liberal, socialist politics. It was in these early movements where International Women’s Day is rooted – specifically in 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter working hours, better pay, and the right to vote.

In 1910, at the second International Conference of Working Women held in Copenhagen, Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) suggested the idea of an International Women’s Day. She urged that every year on the same day, a celebration be held in every country to fight for women’s rights. The conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties, and working women's clubs, agreed on Zetkin’s suggestion unanimously.

International Women’s Day was first celebrated the following year in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland on March 19. That day, more than one million women and men marched in support of women's rights to work, vote, be educated, hold public office, and be free of discrimination.

In 1917, Russian women began a strike for "bread and peace" in response to the death of over 2 million Russian soldiers in World War 1. Four days into the strike, the Tsar was forced to abdicate and the provisional government granted women the right to vote. This strike commenced on February 23 according to the Julian calendar (which was then in use in Russia). According to the Gregorian calendar, however, this day was March 8 – becoming the date of the International Women’s Day celebration to this day.

International Women’s Day was first celebrated by the United Nations in 1975. And from 1996, the UN started to adopt annual themes for this important day.

IWD 2022 Theme

The 2022 IWD theme adopted by the UN is, “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow.” This year’s IWD celebrates the contributions of women and girls around the world who are leading the way in tackling one of the greatest global issues of the twenty-first century: climate change. Women and girls all over the world have been playing a vital part in climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response in order to create a more sustainable future for everyone.

At the same time, however, women are increasingly being acknowledged to be more vulnerable to the effects of climate change than men, as they make up the majority of the world's poor and are more reliant on the natural resources that climate change threatens most. Therefore, in order to achieve sustainable development and greater gender equality, it is critical to continue to study the opportunities, as well as the limits, to empower women and girls to have a voice and be equal actors in decision-making associated with climate change and sustainability.

Aside from the UN-adopted theme, the International Women’s Day website has chosen #BreakTheBias for this year’s IWD social media campaign theme. This campaign calls for people around the world not only to acknowledge gender biases, but also to counter them. Because bias, whether intentional or unconscious, makes it utterly difficult for women and gender minorities to grow and claim their rightful positions in our society. It's not enough to just be aware that bias exists. To level the playing field, action is required.

Playing part

International Women's Day is not limited to a single country, group, or organization. It isn't solely the responsibility of any government, NGO, charity, corporation, academic institution, women's network, or media hub. This day is held in common by all groups everywhere. Do you happen to know why? Well, let’s start off with some data. According to the World Economic Forum, none of us – and certainly not many of our children – will witness gender parity in our lifetimes. It is said that gender parity will take almost a century to achieve.

So, there's clearly a lot of urgent work that needs to be done. Lucky for you, listed below here are some things you can do to put in the work, especially during this International Women’s Day:

Advocate for gender equality in your communities
To ensure that women continue to progress towards gender equality, you can first start with your own communities – whether it be your school, university, or workplace. This International Women’s day, examine your institution/company’s policies and challenge the leaders in place to ensure that women receive fair and equitable support, wherever they are.
Host or attend open discussions
One of the best ways to be inspired to make change towards a gender-equal world is to listen to people share their experiences, knowledge, and advice. Every year, there are plenty of great events planned for International Women's Day to participate in. Or even better, gather your teammates and host your own!
Donate to charity
This International Women's Day, consider donating to a charitable organization that supports women – either locally or globally. Go online and search for organizations that you resonate with.
Support women-owned businesses
Supporting women-owned, operated, and controlled businesses contributes to equal economic empowerment, more representational products and services, and a more prosperous economy as a whole. Buying from women-owned businesses takes us a step closer to achieving gender equality.

毎年3月8日は、世界がひとつになって「国際女性デー」を祝います。しかし、この特別な日に込められた意味をご存知でしょうか？また、どのようにこの日が制定されたのでしょうか？その答えを探ってみましょう。

国際女性デーとは？

国際女性の日（IWD）は、女性の社会的、経済的、文化的、政治的な功績を称える世界的なイベントです。また、この日は、ジェンダー平等を達成するための行動を呼びかける日でもあります。世界各地で、女性の功績を称え、あるいは女性の平等を求めるデモ行進など、人々が一体となる活動が行われています。

国際女性の日（IWD）は、女性の業績を祝い、男女平等についての認識を高め、男女平等を加速するためのロビー活動を行い、女性を中心とした慈善活動のための資金を調達する、1年で最も重要な日の1つです。

国際女性デーの歴史

フェミニズムの第一波までさかのぼってみましょう。都市工業主義と自由主義、社会主義政治という環境の中で、女性運動が初めて生まれました。具体的には1908年、15,000人の女性が労働時間の短縮、賃金の改善、投票権を求めてニューヨークを行進したのが始まりです。

1910年、コペンハーゲンで開催された第2回国際労働女性会議で、クララ・ゼトキン（ドイツ社会民主党の「女性事務所」リーダー）が国際女性デーのアイデアを提案しました。彼女は、毎年同じ日に、女性の権利のために戦うための祝典をすべての国で開催することを強く訴えた。17カ国から組合、社会主義政党、働く女性のクラブを代表する100人以上の女性が参加した会議では、ゼットキンの提案に満場一致で賛成した。

国際婦人デーは、翌年の3月19日にオーストリア、デンマーク、ドイツ、スイスで初めて祝われた。この日、100万人以上の男女が、働く権利、投票権、教育、公職に就く権利、差別のない権利を持つ女性を支持し行進した。
1917年、第一次世界大戦で200万人以上のロシア兵が犠牲になったことを受け、ロシアの女性たちは「パンと平和」を求めてストライキを開始した。ストライキの4日後、皇帝は退位に追い込まれ、臨時政府は女性に選挙権を与えた。このストライキはユリウス暦（当時ロシアで使われていた暦）で2月23日に始まった。しかし、グレゴリオ暦では、この日は3月8日であり、今日まで国際婦人デーの記念日となっている。

国際女性デーは1975年に国連で初めて祝われました。そして、1996年からは、この重要な日に毎年テーマを設けるようになりました。

役割を果たす

国際女性デーは、一つの国、団体、組織に限定されるものではありません。政府、NGO、慈善団体、企業、学術機関、女性ネットワーク、メディアの拠点が単独で責任を負うものではありません。この日は、世界中のすべてのグループによって共通して開催されます。なぜかご存知ですか？まず、データから見てみましょう。世界経済フォーラムによると、男女平等を実現するには、約1世紀かかると言われています。

このように、男女平等の実現には長い時間がかかるため、緊急に行わなければならないことが多くあります。例としてこの国際女性デーの間に、私達ができることを以下に挙げてみました。

地域社会で男女平等を唱えよう
女性が男女平等に向けて前進し続けるために、まずは自分の学校、大学、職場など、自 　　　 分の地域社会から始めてみてはいかがでしょうか。今年の国際女性デーには、あなたの　　　 所属する機関や会社の方針を検討し、女性がどこにいても公平で公正な支援を受けられ　　　 るようにするために、その場のリーダーに挑戦してみてください。

オープン・ディスカッションを主催する、または参加する
男女平等な世界に向けた変化を起こすための最も良い方法のひとつは、人々が経験や知　　　 識、アドバイスを共有することに耳を傾けることです。毎年、国際女性デーには、参加　　　 できる素晴らしいイベントがたくさん企画されています。また、チームメイトを集め　　　　 て、自分たちでイベントを開催するのもよいでしょう。

チャリティーに寄付する
今年の国際女性デーには、地元や世界の女性を支援する慈善団体への寄付を検討してみてはいかがでしょうか。インターネットで、あなたが共感できる団体を探しましょう。

女性が経営する企業を支援する
女性が所有、運営、管理する企業を支援することは、平等な経済的与力、より代表的な 入することは、男女平等の達成に一歩近づくことになります。
