In this note, we want to share about Eye Navi, why we started this note, and what we aim to communicate through it.

What is the "Eye Navi" walking support app for the visually impaired?

Eye Navi is a walking support app that, with just a smartphone, provides navigation, obstacle detection, and a walking recorder feature.

Since its release in April 2023, it has surpassed 10,000 downloads in about four months.

Eye Navi's features include obstacle and landmark detection using AI, combined with navigation tailored for visually impaired users.

By realizing these two features, the app can verbally announce directions to the destination, routes, nearby facilities, obstacles on the path, the color of pedestrian signals, and braille block, among other information.

The obstacle and landmark detection utilizes AI-based image recognition technology, capable of recognizing 20 different types of obstacles and landmarks, designed to help avoid dangers hidden in everyday life for visually impaired people.

Moreover, users can check the summary of the route to their destination, the presence of intersections, and facility information in advance, and register their home or destination. We aimed for route guidance that empathizes with visually impaired users who have many concerns about their journey.

Another major point is its simple operability. Depending on the purpose, users can switch between "Navigation Mode" and "Stroll Mode".

When using Eye Navi, we recommend putting the smartphone in a special neck pouch, allowing movement without occupying the hands.

Why “Eye Navi” started note

So far, Eye Navi has been devoted to developing the app to ensure visually impaired users can enjoy comfortable and safe mobility.

However, we honestly struggled to disseminate information about Eye Navi to let everyone know about it.

Even so, users who empathized with Eye Navi spread the word through word of mouth with the little information we could share, and some shared their impressions and experiences using Eye Navi on YouTube and SNS. We've received a lot of support from everyone.

Going forward, we want to increase our own dissemination of information so that not only visually impaired people but also those around them who provide support can know more about Eye Navi.

Our goal is to grow into an app that supports not only visually impaired people but also the elderly and those who easily get lost, becoming a support for those who are vulnerable in traffic.

As a first step towards achieving this goal, we want to share messages on note that we couldn't convey before to both our supporters and those who will encounter Eye Navi in the future.
