The Extinction of Western Wabi Sabi, Lecture 101, Class 2030. Post Spring Break!

Welcome back to class! How was your vacation?
Did you miss me?

-Sakamoto Ryoma-
I did!

-Isami Kondo-
(Teasing) "Teachers pet!"

OK everyone, shut your traps.
I'm happy to see you and that you haven't killed anyone.
That means you Mr. Toshizo!

-Students-
"Eeewww!" Laughing!

Can anyone tell me what holiday is this month?
Any one?
Mr. Takamori?

-Takamori Saigo-
Showa Day!

Partially correct Saigo. I should have emphasized America.
Need I remind you that this is Tokyo University America, not Japan?

Mr. Shintaro? You're awfully quiet. Do you know?

-Shintaro Nakaoka-
Earth day! They celebrate the ocean and earth by cleaning their communities.
But if you ask me, their not doing a good job!
Did you see the homeless encampment just outside our campus? It's a freaking mess. Trashed!

"Correct-toe-moon-do!" Good point Mr. Nakaoka.
I do miss the cleanliness of Japanese cities, however were guest studying in America. And as it pains me to agree with you, America's public streets weren't always this way.

-Kaisho Katsu-
I have a question!

Mr. Katsu, you always have a question.
Allow me to finish my frame of thought though!
It was established 52 years ago. A year before my birthday!

-Unknown student voice-
"Old man!"

Hijikata! I see you haven't fallen asleep yet.
As I was saying, Senator Gaylord Nelson created this day. Some historians say that a vacuum was created when the Vietnam war ended.
Activism grew strong. The National Organization of Women gained momentum and the Equal Rights Amendment was approved. Equality of the sexes.
Mr. Kaisho! Do you have something to add?

-Kaisho Katsu-
In short, this was the beginning of the end of American Chivalry. The expression "bare foot and pregnant" referred to the commonly held position of a house wife. The men were the "bread winners". Meaning they work and earn money. This deep contrast between men and women was brought into balance by chivalry. Men unconditionally opened doors for any woman. Asked if they needed help, even if the woman was not an acquaintance. "Every single day", women were showered with compliments of there beauty, skill in cooking, child raring, and sexual attraction.
Like whistling at a pretty woman as they walked pass a group of construction workers. Married or not, women would casually smile and proudly nod. A way of saying thank you for the compliment.

God job Mr. Kaisho! Someone did their studying on vacation. If I recall correctly, someone in your family was a Naval engineer. Maybe you'll be a statesmen in the future.
Anyways, your right! But nowadays, just smiling at a woman could get you in trouble. Feminism as well as the many other -isms in Americas current culture has unfortunately flipped the script. The women are allowed to whistle at men, whereas men walk on egg shells everyday with dreams of yesterday.

So, with that said, Mr. Toshizo, we all know you don't have that problem because your surrounded with girls every day!
America is not like the movies any more. My advice, stay outa trouble and let the women make the 1st move!
