今日は生徒の皆さんがよく間違う［省略語］についてお話します。中上級者の方でも知らない人が多いので、しっかりと覚えておいてください。

省略語を意味するものは、おおまかに分けて次の４つです。

――acronym
――initialism
――abbreviation
――contraction

それぞれの違いですが、次の説明をしっかりと読んでください。

acronym は：

一般に「頭字語」と呼ばれ、例えば NATO（North Atlantic Treaty Organization）のように、頭文字を並べたものが１つの単語として発音可能なものをいいます。NATO の場合は［ネイトー］と発音するから acronym になるわけです。

initialism は：

「頭文字語」と訳されています。central processing unit (CPU) のように各単語の頭文字をつなげたもので、アルファベットを一つずつ発音します。

abbreviation は：

一般に「省略、省略形、略語」と訳されていますが、要は後ろの文字を省略しちゃったものです。例えば Mass. は Massachusetts というように -achusetts の部分が省かれてしまっているわけです。

contraction は：

一般に「（語の）縮約（形）」と訳されていますが、要は語の真ん中あたりを抜いた語を言います。例えば、o’clock は of the clock、won’t は will not など。

基本的に acronym はイニシャルだけのものを言うので IMF（International Monetary Fund）も acronym と呼ぶわけですが、IMF は［アイエムエフ］とアルファベットを個別に発音するので、頭字語ではなく頭文字語もしくは単なる略語だと主張する人もいます。

参考までに英語での定義は――

Abbreviation is a general term that refers to any shortened or contracted form of a word or phrase. It can include initialisms, contractions, and acronyms.

An initialism is an abbreviation pronounced one letter at a time, like FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) or USA (United States of America).

A contraction is a shortened form of a word or phrase, often created by omitting one or more letters or sounds, such as “don’t” (do not) or “I’ll” (I will).

An acronym is a word formed from the first letter of each word in a phrase, such as NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) or AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). Acronyms are pronounced as a single word, unlike initialisms.

So, the main differences between these terms are the way they are pronounced and formed.
