Power to Make a Turning Point (8) Personal Edition - Obtaining Motivation

Now that you know your deepest values, you're on the verge of winning your motivation. A motivation that leads to a turning point is a strong feeling or belief that you will "get something done." It's not an extension of desire or hope. It's not "keep doing what you want to do" either. And I want to say in this chapter that your wishes will not come true, but will be won by yourself.
The motivations that lead to turning points are the active motivations, the mission-driven motivation (I have no choice but to be) and the arousal motivation (I should be). It is not a desire (or hope) that is a passive motive. The former is the motive won by the person himself, and the latter is the motive recalled by the occasion.

In Japan, there was an ancient method of discerning active and passive motives.

In Zen temples, monks who come to apply for ascetic training are made to wait for a long time in front of the gate, after which they are only allowed to clean the garden. At a Japanese restaurant, the apprentice only did dishes for a few years. In both cases, the high priest and the shopkeeper determine whether the pupil's motivation was active and lasting. Now it has become an event of lore, but in an age when a master took only a few disciples in his lifetime, he probably needed to discern who to raise at the risk of his life.

In this chapter, I will explain the process of winning this active motivation.

(Active motivational process)
Understand your deepest values and gain an understanding of
what actions make you feel valued and what causes emotional turmoil.
                                           ▼
Use your deepest values to compare yourself to where you are today,
identify where you are out of touch with your values.
                                           ▼
Recognize that the gap is caused by yourself, not society or the environment,
and wipe away feelings of resignation, such as escape or embarrassment.
                                           ▼
You inspired yourself and actively sought help from those around you.
In this sequence of events a feeling of intense belief in yourself springs up,
It became clear what to start with first.
                                           ▼
Gain the new most values and form the next personality with active motivation to persist

Let's apply this process to the example of "Biligal" (an inferior student). "Biligal" is a true story of a girl who was at the bottom of her grade and got accepted to a top university after getting good grades in a year.

From various anecdotes, the deepest value of the main character, "Biligal", was "I want everyone to praise me and acknowledge me."
                                            ▼
"Biligal" at that time was:
She got a failing grade on the test.
Repeatedly violating school rules, wearing showy hair and clothes.
She went to a night-club.
She was treated as a bad student at school.
                                            ▼
The cause of the gap
(Social and environmental factors)
She was scolded by her school teacher and behaved in a manner called "human scum."
Her mother was overprotective and complimented her even when 'Biligal' did something wrong.
The father cut off the financial aid she needed to go on to higher education.
She ran away from reality as an excuse, etc.

(Factors behind 'Billigal')
She became a central figure in the gang.
She excuses herself that it's good because her buddies were doing it. And she was doing wrong, too.
She assumed she wasn't expected by her father, who looked up to her younger brother.
                                             ▼
The reason for this situation is 'Billigal' herself.
She made her mother cry because 'Biligal' became a delinquent.
She had given up going to college because it was boring

But 'Biligal' had second thoughts to "I want everyone to praise me and acknowledge me."
She could not give up here,
What to do?
Her mother suggested to go to cram school.
She had no reason to refuse, so she went to a cram school and met Mr. Tsubota(teacher) there, and she would trust him and praise her and acknowledge her.
                                               ▼
She learned how to approach her studies from Mr. Tsubota,
she also had a study plan made.
Until now, she has never been long for anything,
but she couldn't give up on this study plan.
She studied hard every day.
She got good grades and was recognized by those around her.
Her rank in the school also rose to the top.
She won't end like this, she threw away her past self, and gained a strong belief and goal that she must surely pass the examination of a top university for the sake of her parents, Mr. Tsubota, for whom she was indebted.
                                                ▼
She was accepted to a top university, the school of her choice, and achieved the deepest values of 'Biligal', "I want everyone to praise me and acknowledge me." And She recollected “experiencing that life would be totally different if I tried to do my best to die. "
And 'Biligal' has acquired a new and deepest value: She can please the people she has cared for and the people she cares for.
Now 'Biligal' has also met him, whom she has promised to marry, and engaged in bridal work.

I've put together a motivational scenario based on a true story, "Biligal." Notice how the feelings of "Biligal" led her to grasp the motivations and values that open up her life prospects. It was not because she happened to meet Mr. Tsubota, but because "Bilingal" actually acted actively from herself, and as a result, she derived her motivation and values from her own feelings.

Motivation sprang up because the gap between who she wanted to be and who she was constrained from easy actions, changed her values, and changed her personality with a clear goal and mission. And she acquired a new goal, a new mission.
We should refer to that process in this anecdote.

So let's actually look for your motivations. To do this, you need to draw on your deepest values to make a comparison with who you are today, and to identify the gaps that have separated you from your values.

In the chart below, write down your deepest values, who you want to be, and who you are.
Who you want to be are based on your deepest values.

It can be easy to understand, it can be a professional name, a job type, or it can be an abstract picture of you.
(Example of entry)
Become a lawyer
Become a teacher
Become an artist
I'm meeting a lover who has a lot of friends.
Respected filial piety
Making new discoveries that are gaining praise

Next, let's fill in current yourself.
(Example of entry)
Appalled by the amount of money in one's bankbook
Experience and learning so far are completely useless
Friends and lovers move away from one's surroundings
I don't see or know what I'm getting into.
Stay in your room and get stuck in a competitive game.
I'm worried about SNS posts.

Analyze the cause of the difference by dividing it into social/environmental and yourself. It may be easier to understand social and environmental causes by paraphrasing them as excuses for yourself. Your own causes are hard to notice, but looking back at yourself can lead to feelings of intense conviction, so you need to take the time to unpack the feelings deep within you.

As a hint to delve into your own causes
① Action: Did you spare no effort or did your action last?
② Emotions: Didn't make excuses, didn't flow to ease
③ Cognition: Did you escape reality or feel sorry for yourself?
④ Independence: Was I not terribly distressed or was I acting like myself?

These can be factors that distract you from the realization of the motives that drew you from your deepest values. In other words, the very deflationary spiral factor that pushes your positive motivation into feelings of resignation.

Let's fill it out right away.

Have you come to the realization that you have to take action with the emotions that come out of acknowledging your own gaps? Was there a positive desire for someone to help? You are already at the threshold of a turning point when you are wrapped up in the self-inspiring feeling of not wanting to go back.

In the next chapter, I'll give you some tips on how to take action.
