Time he spent in the hut was terrible. His father locked him up and went off to the town, leaving Huck alone. He also started to hit Huck with his stick. It was because he wanted Huck’s money, but he couldn’t. He was always drunk and angry.

Therefore Huck started planning to escape and go down the river to live in the woods somewhere. When his father was out, he began to cut a hole in the wooden wall of the hut. And one morning, he found a canoe on the river. He decided to use it when he escaped. That afternoon, his father went off to town. Huck thought ‘He won’t be back tonight.’

First, he shot a wild pig and put its blood on the floor of the hut. And then he broke down the door with an axe. Finally, he put some big stones in a sack and pulled it along behind him to the river. He had faked his death! After that, he took the canoe and went down the river to Jackson’s Island.

It was after eight o’clock when he woke up next morning, and the sun was high in the sky. Huck heard a noise up the river. He saw his father, Judge Thatcher, Tom Sawyer and his Aunt Polly and his brother Sid, and lots of the others. They looked for Huck’s body, but they didn’t seem to notice that Huck already escaped.

On the Jackson’s Island, Huck caught a fish and cooked it for meal. He lived there like that for a few days and he thought ‘This is my island. I’m the only person on it.’ But soon, he knew that he was not alone. He found a fire and smoke. ‘I need to find out who it is.’ Huck thought.

He moved along the river in his canoe, and reached the place where he saw a fire. He found a man lying by the fire, it was Jim, Miss Watson’s slave! ‘Please don’t hurt me! I’ve always been good to dead people!’ Jim cried. ‘It’s alright, Jim. I’m not dead.’, said Huck. Huck asked Jim why he was on the island and he said that Miss Watson tried to sell him away. And he heard the people talking about Huck’s death, which was a fake.

Then they carried their stuff into a cave and hid the canoe under some trees. And then it rained for days. the river got higher and higher and things came down the river, which was lucky for Huck and Jim.

Among them, was a little wooden house. Inside, there were a bed, old chairs, clothes and something that looked like a man. Jim went in to see, but he said the man was dead and his face was horrible. Therefore Huck decided not to see it. They only took stuff from the house and went back to the cave.

Another night, Huck and Jim found a raft on the river. It was made of good, strong wood, and was about four metres by five metres. Huck told Jim ‘This could be useful.’ So they tied it up under the trees. They would travel south with this raft.
