旅をしていると、いろいろな出会いがある。記憶に残る人、記憶に残らない人。記憶に残る条件の一つは、出会う場所も重要だと思う。偶然を必然だと思わせてくれる様な舞台が整っているなら、僕はきっとその人を覚えている。ディジュリドゥの彼とは、グレイハウンド長距離バスの中で「さようなら」をし、予定通り、僕はヌーサで下車した。ヌーサ、いったいどんな町だろうか。手持ちのガイドブックには、リゾート地のページに小さく載っているだけで、市内地図などの役に立つ情報は掲載されていない。できるだけ早く、働き口を見つけたい。気温が高く、暑い日だった。バス停の付近を歩いていると、さっそくマリン・アクティビティ案内人に捕まった。さすが、観光地である。手に持っているプラカードには、バナナボート80ドル〜となっている。（サングラスをかけたバナナが、バナナボートにまたがっている絵があり、そこには「エキサイティング！」と書いてある）そのアクティビティ料金が実際には安いのか高いのか僕には判断できなかったが、そもそもの話、僕にそんな余裕はない。ここに来るまでの長距離バス料金で65ドルを使っているから、手持ちの現金はのこりはおよそ30ドルである。ヌーサのメインビーチであるヌーサ・ヘッズに行けば、当面の職が見つかりはしないかしら、という都合のいい希望を持っていた。仕事にさえありつけたら、泊まるところなどはなんとでもなるだろう。海岸沿いで野宿をすることも選択肢の一つとして考えている。さっきのアクティビティ案内人が、数人の若い女の子たちをバンに乗せ走り去っていった。僕は、小さくなっていく車の影を見つめていた。ふと、海はあの方向にあるのだ、と見当をつけた。見知らぬ町、持っていたガイドブックにはほとんど情報がない。ここでは情報も現地調達である。ギターケースを背負い直してゆっくりと歩き出す。背中が暑い。数キロは歩いただろうか。あることに気が付く。この街は最近整備されたのだろう、舗装されている道路や縁石がどれも同じ新しさを持って見える。道路だけは新しいが、奥に立っている住宅はそれぞれの年代を感じさせる外観を持っていた。郊外の小綺麗な住宅地という雰囲気だった。バラとティーとバルコニーが似合いそうな趣があった。ところでオーストラリアという国は、日本の土地の感覚と比べると2.5倍ほど大きく感じる。歩いても歩いても、風景がゆっくりとしか変化しないのだ。さっきのバンが去っていった方向に歩き続けているものの、何度か交差点や緩やかな曲がりの直線があったせいで、僕は方角を見失いそうになっている。とにかく、東に向かうことに気をつけて歩きつづけた。

When I travel, I meet many different people. Some are memorable and some are not. I think one of the conditions for being memorable is the place where you meet people. If the stage is set up in such a way that a coincidence is made to seem inevitable, I am sure I will remember that person. I said good-bye to my didgeridoo player on the Greyhound bus and got off at Noosa, as planned. What kind of town is Noosa? The guidebook I had on hand contained only a small description on the resort page, but no city map or any other useful information. I wanted to find a job as soon as possible. It was a hot day with high temperatures. As I walked around the bus stop, I was immediately caught by a marine activity guide. As one would expect from a tourist destination, he had a placard in his hand. The placard in his hand said "Banana Boat" from $80. (There is a picture of a banana wearing sunglasses straddling a banana boat, and it says "Exciting!" ) I could not decide whether the price of this activity was actually cheap or expensive, but I could not afford it. I had spent $65 on the long-distance bus fare to get here, so I only had about $30 left in cash. I was hoping that if I went to Noosa Heads, the main beach in Noosa, I might be able to find a job for the time being. If I could find a job, I would be able to find a place to stay. He is considering camping out along the coast as an option. The activity guide from earlier loaded several young girls into a van and drove away. I stared at the shadow of the van, which was getting smaller and smaller. I suddenly realized that the ocean was in that direction. I was in a strange town, and the guidebook I had with me gave me very little information. Here, I had to get information locally. He put his guitar case back on his back and started walking slowly. My back was hot. I must have walked several kilometers. I noticed something. The streets and curbs all look the same and new, as if they have been recently renovated. Only the streets were new, but the houses standing in the back had their own dated appearance. It had the feel of a small, clean suburban residential neighborhood. Roses, tea, and balconies seemed to fit the atmosphere. By the way, the country of Australia feels 2.5 times larger than the land in Japan. No matter how much I walk, the scenery changes only slowly. I kept walking in the direction the van had just left, but there were several intersections and gentle turns in a straight line that made me lose my bearings. Anyway, I kept on walking, keeping in mind that I was heading east.
