晶馬は手荷物受取場所で、ゴム製カーテンから自分のギターケースが登場する時を待っていた。ベルトコンベヤーに乗って流れてくるスーツケースを見つめながら、シドニー空港に来るのはこれで二度目だな、と思った。ここに来るのは日本からやってきたとき以来のことであり、晶馬にとってシドニーは地元であるわけではない。それでも不思議なものでシドニーに帰ってこれたことに対する深い安心感があった。ついに現れた自分のギターケースを手に持ち、晶馬は空港を出た。バックパックとギターケース。これが晶馬の持ち物のすべてだった。空港の外に出て、煙草に火をつけた。喫煙所で声をかけてくる人がいた。１９０センチはありそうな長身で痩身、赤毛のくるくるの毛。足下は履き古したコンバースだ。片方、紐がほどけている。幼そうな目元をした彼はディジュリドゥを背負っていた。彼はカナダ人だった。彼は今しがたオーストラリアに入国したばかりだった。ディジュリドゥの演奏に夢中になって、本場のオーストラリアへやってきたという筋金入りのミュージシャンだった。晶馬がギターを背負っていたものだから、同じ仲間だと認識したらしい。実際、シドニーのオペラハウス周辺にはたくさんのパフォーマーがいる。シドニーの役所から許可こそ必要であるものの、そこまでハードルの高い許可申請ではないようだ。オペラハウスがシドニー市内有数の観光地であることからも、多くのパフォーマーが集まっていた。そして、多くのパフォーマーたちが、少なくない収入を得ているということを、晶馬は人づてに聞いて知っていた。彼の名前はマーティンといった。名はジェイコブ。ジェイコブもまた、その場所で演奏して生活をしていきたいという夢をもって入国した一人だ。彼は、シドニー市内にアパートを借りて生活したい、と考えていることがわかった。ビザの種類は晶馬と同じワーキングホリデービザである。カナダ人であるジェイコブは当然のことながら完璧な英語が話せた。晶馬は、多少ではあるもののシドニーの土地勘を持っている。シドニーの土地勘がないジェイコブは、英語ができる。二人の意見が揃った。それは、ルームシェアをすることだった。

Shoma was in the baggage claim area, waiting for his guitar case to appear through the rubber curtain. As he stared at the suitcases flowing on the conveyor belt, he realized that this was the second time he had been to the Sydney airport. This was the first time he had been here since his arrival from Japan, and for Shoma, Sydney was not his hometown. Still, it was a strange feeling of deep relief to be back in Sydney. Finally, Shoma left the airport with his guitar case in his hand. Backpack and guitar case. This was all that Shoma had with him. He walked out of the airport and lit a cigarette. Someone approached him at the smoking area: a tall, skinny man who looked to be about 190 centimeters tall, with curly red hair. On his feet were a pair of worn-out Converse. One of the laces was untied. He had childish eyes and carried a didgeridoo on his back. He was Canadian. He had just arrived in Australia. He was a hardcore musician who had come to Australia, the home of the didgeridoo, because he was crazy about playing it. Since Shoma was carrying a guitar on his back, he recognized him as one of his friends. In fact, there are many performers around the Opera House in Sydney. Although they need a permit from the Sydney city office, it does not seem to be that difficult to apply for a permit. The fact that the Opera House is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Sydney also attracted many performers. Shoma had heard from others that many of the performers were earning a good amount of money. His family name is Martin. His name was Jacob. Jacob was also one of those who entered the country with the dream of performing there for a living. We learned that he wanted to rent an apartment in the city of Sydney and live there. His visa type is the same as Shoma's, a working holiday visa. Being Canadian, Jacob naturally spoke perfect English. Shoma has some local knowledge of Sydney. Jacob, who has no local knowledge of Sydney, speaks English. They agreed on one thing: they would share a room.
