How to change the verb.

  • AR 👉  Ando 
    Caminar → Caminando 
    Viajar → Viajando
    Hablar ~ hablando. 

  • IR / ER 👉 Iendo 
    Beber - beciendo 
    Vivir - Viviendo 
    Comer - Comiendo

  • Those are trouble makers 
    Leer - Leyendo. 
    Oír - Oyendo. 
    Ir - Yendo. 

How to use "Estuve + Gerundio" 

  • Estuve estudiando para ser el programador. 

Just readily to say, it is a simple expression. there is no conjunction and no exact time written. 

  • Estuve caminando de 2 a 7. 

There is the ending time (2 a 7), so you can use "Estuve". 

How to use "Estaba + Gerundio" 

  • Ayer a las siete de la tarde estaba lloviendo. 

There is no ending time (Ayer a las siete de la tarde), thus, you can use estaba in this case.  

  • Estaba lloviendo y decidimos no salir. 

  • Estaba leyendo un libro pero se fue la luz y me acosté a dormir. 

There is an action going (Decidimos no salir) on the period or the action connected, therefore, you can use estaba in the case. If you wanna use conjunction words, you need to make the sentence with "Estaba". 

To sum up

Estuve viajando seis meses  por toda Europa. Mientras estaba viajando, conocí muchas culturas diferentes. 

  • Estuve + Gerundio 
    Single sentence without conjunctions or the sentence  written ending time. 

  • Estaba + Gerundio
    The sentence without the ending time.(On going)
    The sentence with conjunctions (Si, Pero, Y, Quendo )

 

 Other examples

Estuve bailando toda la noche. 

Llegue muy temprano a la fiesta y aun estaban decorando la casa.
