　「ちょっと言いにくいのですけど」
教室の後ろ隅からデヴィッド・フークアの声がした。オールAのアフリカ系アメリカ人の学生であるデヴィッドは、クラスで一目置かれていたが、近づきにくいと感じている者もいるようだった。慧子は、デヴィッドが、アメリカ人にしては婉曲だったり穏便だったりする物言いをするところに、親しみを感じていた。
「仮定の話として、私たちに質問しているのですよね」
「そのとおり。一種の思考実験と言ってもいいかな」
「いくら思考実験といっても、全くあり得ない事態について考えるよう言われても、どう考えていいかわかりません」
「『まったくあり得ない』というと？」
「実験に参加しようと意識する前に、脳が参加を決めているという事態は、あり得ません」
   "Tim, it's kind of hard to say."
David Fuqua's voice came from the back corner of the classroom. David, an African-American student with All-A was looked up to by most of the classmates, but some seemed to feel he was a bit difficult to access. Keiko felt a sense of familiarity with him in his euphemisms and gentle mannerisms in saying things, which Keiko had found rare among the Americans.
"You are asking us hypothetical questions. Am I right?”
"Exactly. I guess you could call it a kind of thought experiment."
"Even though it's a thought experiment, I don't know what to think when I'm told to think about a completely impossible situation."
"What do you mean by ' completely impossible'?"
“There is no way that your brain has decided to participate in an experiment before you are conscious of it.”
 
　「どうしてそう思うのかな？」
「実験の目的と内容は、実験を行う科学者から、言葉で伝えられたのでしょう」
「そうだね」
「言葉によるコミュニケーションは、意識的な過程です」
「なるほど」
ティムがうなずいてみせる。
「実験の目的と内容を意識して理解した上で、実験に参加するかどうかを決めるために検討しなければならない事柄があります。まず、価値判断が必要です。科学の進歩に自分が貢献することを重要だと思うかどうかによって、参加するかしないかが決まります。それと関連しますが、他の活動との間の優先順位も決めなければいけません。実験が予定されている時間に他の用事を予定していたら、その用事と実験のどちらを取るかです。すべて、頭の中で言葉を使って検討しないと決められないことばかりです。ですから、意識より先に脳が意思決定することはあり得ないのです」
"Why do you think so?"
"The purpose and content of the experiment must have been communicated with words by the scientist conducting the experiment."
"I agree"
“Communication with words is a conscious process.”
"I see"
Tim nods.
“After consciously understanding the purpose and content of the experiment, there are issues that must be consciously considered in order to decide whether to participate in the experiment. It counts whether she/he thinks it valuable to contribute to the progress of science. And, related to this, he/she must also prioritize among other activities. If he/she has other errands scheduled at that time, he/she has to decide which errands is more important.　 You can't decide on all of these things without putting them into words of them in the mind, i.e., without conscious consideration.

　さすがに頭脳明晰なデヴィッドだけあって、いい所を突いてくると慧子は思った。ティムが慧子に顔を向け、質問してきた
「慧子は、どう思う？　君は、被験者は実験への参加を決めたときに腕を上げる意志決定をしていたと言ったが、その意思決定とは、今、デヴィッドが言ったように、意識を伴う意志決定ということかな？」
「そうです。その時に意識的に意思決定していたから、実験中には意識する前に脳が腕を上げる準備をしていても、おかしくないのです」
   Keiko thought, as expected of David, who had a clear mind, he hit a good point. Tim turned to Keiko and asked, "What do you think, Keiko? 　You said that the subject made the decision to raise his arm when he decided to participate in the experiment. Do you mean that decision was a conscious one?”
"Yes, that was what I meant. The subject made a conscious decision at the time of entry to the experiment, so it's not surprising that during the experiment her brain was preparing to raise her arm before she even thought about it."

　「ということは、君も、被験者が実験に加わろうと思う前に被験者の脳が実験への参加を決定していることは、あり得ないと考えているのだね」
「あり得ないと考えています。腕を上げるなどの単純な動作は意識を介さずに行うことができますが、実験に参加するかどうかは、デヴィッドが指摘するように価値判断を含む複雑な決定です。そのような決定は意識的に行われる必要があります」
「なるほど」
ティムが、微笑を浮かべてうなずいた。
"So, you, too, think it's impossible for the subject's brain to decide to participate in the experiment before they consciously wanted to."
Yes. I think it’s impossible.
"I don't think it's possible. Simple actions such as raising your arm can be done unconsciously, but whether or not to participate in an experiment, as David points out, is a complex decision involving value judgments. To make such decisions, we need to think consciously.
"I see"
Tim nodded with a smile.
