　「ケイコ、今のティムの考えについて、どう思う？」
デヴィッドが慧子に尋ねてきた。その声に助け舟を求める調子を感じた慧子は、答えるのをためらった。慧子自身はティムの考え方に賛同しているのだが、それを明らかにすると、デヴィッドに反論することになる。デヴィッドがクラス全体から一目置かれていることを考えると、それはあまり得策とは思えなかった。かといって嘘をつく気にもなれず、慧子は、
「私には、わからない」
と答えた。デヴィッドの顔に失望が浮かんだように慧子は感じた。
   "Keiko, what do you think of Tim's thinking now?"
David asked Keiko. Sensing in his voice an ask for Keiko’s help, Keiko hesitated to answer. Keiko herself agreed with Tim. But if she revealed it, she would refute David. Considering that David was respected by the whole class, that didn't seem like a good idea. However, Keiko didn't feel like telling a lie.
"I do not know"
Keiko replied. It seemed to her David's face showed disappointment.
 
　その時、思いがけないところから矢が飛んできた。クラス討議をオブザーブしていた三人の日本人教育学者の一人が、「山科さん」と、日本語で声をかけてきたのだ。慧子の父と同じ大学に勤務している田代という名の若い男性の学者だった。ティムが驚いたように田代を見ると、田代は「これは、失礼しました。私から生徒さんに質問してもいいですか？」と、英語でティムに許可を求めた。ティムは、一瞬、ためらうような表情を見せたが、すぐに笑顔になって「どうぞ、どんどんご質問なさってください」と答えた。
   At that moment, an arrow flew to Keiko from an unexpected place. One of the three Japanese researchers observing the class discussion called out to Keiko in Japanese, "Yamashina-san." It was a young male scholar named Tashiro who worked at the same university as Keiko's father. When Tim looked at Tashiro in surprise, Tashiro said, "Excuse me. Could I ask class students questions?" Tim looked hesitant for a moment, but then smiled and replied, "Go ahead and ask any questions."
 
　「Ms. Yamashina、」
と、田代が今度は英語で話しかけてきた。
「腕を上げる実験に特定せず、一般論として考えてみてください。何かの対象について、意識と無意識が同時に検討を加えている可能性があると思いますか？それとも、そういう可能性はないと思いますか？」
慧子は、田代が「一般論」、「可能性」という言葉を使ってくれたおかげで、正面からデヴィッドに反論する形にならずに本心を話せると思った。
   "Ms. Yamashina,"
Tashiro spoke to Keiko in English this time.
"You don’t have to be specific to the arm-raising experiment. Please think in general terms. Do you think it's possible that the conscious and the unconscious are simultaneously considering something? Or is that not the case?"
Keiko thought that thanks to Tashiro's use of the words "in general terms" and "possibility", she was able to speak her mind without turning into a head-on objection to David.

　「ティムが指摘したように、乳幼児の脳は無意識の状態で作動していると思います。乳幼児が言葉を覚えていく過程では、無意識的な脳の働きと言葉を使った意識的な脳の働きが同時進行すると考えます。そして、成長がある段階に達すると、意識的な脳の働きが支配的になるはずです。ですが、無意識と意識を同時に働かせる脳の機能が完全に失われるわけではないと思います。画家や音楽家は、普段から無意識と意識を同時並行的に働かせているのではないでしょうか？」
   “As Tim pointed out, I believe that the brain of infants operates in an unconscious state. At the earlier stage of infants learning words and getting used to conscious thinking using words, unconscious and conscious thinking work simultaneously Then, at a certain point of growth, conscious brain work becomes dominant. However I think the brain's ability to have unconsciousness and consciousness work simultaneously remains. It seems to me that painters and musicians are usually making the unconscious and conscious work in parallel.
 
　田代が慧子の言葉に「なるほど」とうなずいてから、慧子としては、あまり答えたくない質問を投げかけてきた。
「今、画家や音楽家とおっしゃいましたが、無意識と意識を同時に働かせるのは、芸術的な活動に限られると思いますか？」
Having nodded "I see" , Tashiro asked Keiko a question which she was reluctant to answer.
“You referred to painters and musicians. Do you think that having the unconscious and the conscious work at the same time is limited to artistic activities?”

　今の慧子は、芸術活動に限らず、人間のすべての活動で、無意識と意識が同時に働いていると考え始めていた。しかも、意志決定の主導権は、意識よりも無意識の方にあるのではないかとも考え始めていた。しかし、それをあからさまに口にすると、せっかく、いったんは避けることができたデヴィッドとの対立を招きかねない。
　それに……と慧子は思った。今、自分が考え始めていることについて、証拠があるわけではない。証拠がない以上、それは、単なる仮説だ。ただの仮説を、クラスメイトと対立するリスクを冒してまで発表する必要はないと、慧子は判断した。
「芸術活動についてなら、私が見聞きしてきた事例から、無意識と意識が同時に働いている可能性が高いと仮定できます。ですが、この仮説を証明する証拠があるわけではありません。人間の、その他の活動については、私の手元には、仮説を立てられるだけの材料すらありません」
   Now Keiko had begun to think the unconscious and the conscious were working at the same time, not only in artistic activities, but in all human activities. Moreover, she began to think that the unconscious, rather than the conscious, was in control of man’s decision-making. But, saying it outright, Keiko was afraid, would invite a conflict with David that she had once able to avoid.
   Besides, Keiko had no evidence to prove her idea. With no evidence to support it, any explanation of natural phenomenon is just a hypothesis. Keiko decided that there was no need to risk confronting her classmates by announcing mere hypothesis.
"With regard to artistic activity, from the cases I've seen and heard, I can hypothesize that the unconscious and conscious are likely to work at the same time. However, there is no evidence to prove this hypothesis. And, with regard to the other human activities, I have far less materials on which to build a hypothesis."

　言い終えた慧子は、田代からじっと見つめられていることに気づいた。その視線が、逃げたなと非難しているように感じるのは自分の被害妄想だと自分に言い聞かせ、慧子は田代から目をそらした。慧子を見るティムとデヴィッドの表情にも微妙なニュアンスのようなものを感じたが、それを詮索することは止めておいた。慧子は、このクラスが一刻も早く終わって欲しいと思った。
   When Keiko finished speaking, she noticed that Tashiro was staring at her. His gaze looked as if blaming Keiko for her hiding true idea. Keiko told herself that it was her paranoia that made Tashiro’s gaze look that way and averted her eyes from Tashiro. Keiko sensed some subtle nuances in Tim and David's expressions as they looked at her, but she refrained from prying into their meaning. Keiko had become eager for this class to end as soon as possible.
