to Ving
look forward to Ving 「~するのを楽しみにしている」
ex. I look forward to seeing you. 「私はあなたに会えることを楽しみにしています」
toの後ろに動詞があったら、to不定詞だと思って、to Vにしてしまいそうですが、これから紹介する表現は、to Vingになっています。前置詞の後ろは名詞しか置けませんので、原形にしてはダメです。
be used to Ving 「~するのに慣れている」
ex. You'll soon get used to Ving in Tokyo.
「東京の生活にすぐ慣れるでしょう」
used toは識別が大事です。また、usedの部分は、accustomedに置き換えることができます。
What do you say to Ving ? 「~はどうですか?」
ex. What do you say to going for a drive?
「ドライブはいかがですか?」
How about A? = How about Ving? = Why don't you do? = Why not do ? = What about A ? = What about doing ? になっています。
object to Ving 「~することに反対する」
ex. He objected to my going abroad.
「彼は私が外国へ行くのに反対した」
devote O to Ving 「~することに捧げる」
ex. Tom devotes his days to reading.
「トムは毎日読書にふけっている」
When it comes to Ving 「~することになると」
ex. When it comes to entertaining children, Ann is really it.
「子どもをもてなすことにかけては、アンは天下一品だ」
前置詞 Ving
on Ving 「~するとすぐに」
ex. On arriving at the store, he knocked on the door.
「店に着くと、彼はドアのノックした」
=as soon as
in Ving 「~するとき」
ex.You should be careful in crossing the street.
「道路を横断するときは注意しなさい」
=when
in Ving
be busy (in) Ving 「~するのに忙しい」
ex. He is busy studying English. 「彼は英語を勉強するのに忙しい」
have trouble (in) Ving 「~するのに苦労する」
ex. I often have trouble getting my meaning across in French.
「フランス語で自分の言いたいことを相手にわかってもらうのにしばしば苦労する」
trouble = difficulty
There is no use (in) Ving 「~しても無駄だ」
ex.There is no use crying over spilled milk.
「覆水盆に返らず」
= It is no use Ving = It is useless to V
use = point = good = sense
spend 時間 (in) Ving 「~するのに時間を使う」
ex. She spent two hours repairing the car.
「彼女は2時間かけて車を修理した」
頻出表現
feel like Ving 「~したい気がする」
ex. I feel like sleeping. 「眠りたいよ」
feel inclined to V = want to = would like to V
It goes without saying that SV 「~は言うまでもない」
ex. It goes without saying that he is a great guitarist.
「彼が偉大なギタリストであることは言うまでもない」
= Needless to say, SV
never A without Ving 「Aすれば必ず~する」
ex. She never comes without complaining of others.
「彼女が来れば必ず人の悪口を言う」
= Whenever SV, S'V'
worth (while) Ving 「~する価値がある」
ex.It is worth seeing the film.
「その映画を見る価値がある」
= worth while to V
There is no VIng 「~することはできない」
ex. There is no knowing what will happen.
「何が起こるかわかったものではない」
= It is impossible to V
cannot help Ving 「~せずにはいられない」
ex. I couldn't help laughing. 「笑わずにはいられなかった」
Would you mind Ving? 「~していただけませんか?」
ex. Would you mind taking our picture?
「私たちの写真を撮っていただけますか?」
be in the habit of Ving 「~することにしている」
ex. I will break my habit of smoking. 「禁煙しよう」
= make it a rule to V
be on the point of Ving 「まさに~するところである」
ex. The train was on the point of starting.
「電車は出発しようとしていた」
= be about to V
