中学一年生の英語の教科書と言うのはたいてい”Good morning”や”How are you?”

Level

How do you get happiness?

How to get happiness? It is easy for me to get happiness. When I play soccer, I eat with my friends, when I reading books in my favorite place, going to Trinity Western University, etc. I feel happy to like this. How to get happiness differs from people. However I think we should feel happy all days. To live normally, health, and to there are family and friend. If we lower hurdle, we can feel happy all days. I feel happy all days. Because I could lower hurdle. There is happiness in all days.

Myself

I write what I want to change about myself and what I would never change about myself. First, what I want to change about myself is my body, because I have some problems. First of all, I am thin, and I cannot be fat even if I eat a lot. The reason why I want to be fat is because I play soccer, so I need a strong body. Next, I have low back pain. This is very bad for me because I have pain when I play soccer, and I cannot sit long time because of low back pain. Sometimes, there are situations that I cannot focus on study because of low back pain. Finally, I get sick easily since I was a child. I really want to change my body. Second, what I would never change about myself is the ability that I can manage my time well. I have known importance of the time since I was a junior high school student. There are a lot of people that do not know importance of the time and how to use their time. I am happy because I could notice importance of the time. I think that people need to notice importance of the time if they would like to live good their life. I think that I can manage my time better than other people. I do not want to lose this ability.

The Cause of Aging Society

Yuto Itoyam

ESLI

There is a serious statistic, 1 out of 4, about the population in Japan. That number is the ratio of elderly people among the total population in Japan, which means Japan has aging society as a huge problem. This issue exists not only in Japan but also in the other countries in the world. Aging society is known well by a lot of people as a serious problem in the world, but there are many people who do not know what causes it. Aging society, one of the biggest issues in the world, is caused by the enhancement of the social welfare system, the improvement of people’s health, the breakthrough in medical technology.

One of the reasons why the world has aging society issue is because of enhancement of the social welfare. In advanced countries, these countries usually have good social welfare for old people. An example of it is health care for old people, which is called Medicare in North America. In comparison with the past and now, there are obvious differences about health care especially in advanced countries, which can help people to keep healthy. The fact that is written in Setting Limits: Medical Goals in an Aging Society shows, “In 1980, the 11 percent of our population over age 65 consumed some 29 percent of the total American health-care expenditures of $219.4 billion. By 1984, the percentage had increased to 31 percent and total expenditures to 387 billion. Medicare expenditures reached $59 billion in 1984, which Medicaid and other government health expenditures on the elderly came to an additional $15 billion” (Callahan, 1987, p. 119). According to these statistics, the reality that health care for old people developed is certain. Next, another fact is the popularization of pension system, which helps us to live easily after people retire. A study in Aging populations and Public Pension Schemes shows, “Estimates of total public pension expenditures at the beginning of the 1990s indicate that public pension expenditures (as a percent of GDP) vary widely across the countries considered” (Chand and Jaeger, 1996, p. 5). Pension plan gives people not only money but also relief, so old people can live more healthful than the past in recent years. The social welfare such as health care, and pension plan takes a big role to keep old people healthy.

The next reason is the improvement of people’s health. There are no people who do not believe that people’s health got better than the past. Packages of cigarettes have warning to let people do not smoke lately in some countries, and also it has gotten more difficult to get alcohol recently than the past. In a book about aging population, Population Ageing: Causes and Consequences, says, “There is, however, evidence that certain behaviours, such as avoidance of smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, ‘Mediterranean’ type diets involving consumption of lots of fruit and vegetable, and physical activity, area all associated with better health outcomes in later life” (Grundy, 2006, p. 91). This is the one of facts that is normally known by everyone. Secondly, it is believed that people’s health got better in almost all countries. In 19th centuries to the beginning of 20th centuries, the countries that are in Europe lower deaths number by development of economy, which are improving the safe water’s availability, and preventing epidemic disease (Morgan and Kunkel, 2007. P. 62). Obviously, health of folk had improved year after year in the world. Lately, there are still some problems in our health such as metabolic syndrome, and unbalanced diet, but it is considered that people’s health will get better from now on too.

The last cause is the breakthrough in medical technology, which is the most familiar cause. In comparison with the past and the present, there are huge differences in medical technology as a book, Aging, Society and the Life Course says, “Sustaining life and preventing death for as long as possible is a hallmark of the tremendous advances in our medical technology” (Morgan and Kunkel, 2007, p. 255). For example, several illnesses that were not able to be cured are curable now by high medical technology. Second, medical technology has developed astonishingly in 19th century. A book that was titled Challenges of an Aging Society: Ethical Dilemmas, Political Issues tells us, “In the past century, medical technology and science have increased human longevity and prolonged survival from chronic diseases and trauma to a degree that would astonish our nineteenth-century counterparts” (Ed, Pruchno and Smyer, 2007, p. 34). This shows that even treatment for trauma was developed in 19th century. Many things have improved in medical technology, and these are still getting better through research in medicine these days as well. It is considered that medical technology is going to get better, so the number of elderly people will increase from now too.

The reason why the social issue, aging society, happens is because of the enhancement of the social welfare system, the improvement of people’s health, the breakthrough in medical technology. The first reason is health care and the popularization of pension system, which are the social welfare system. The next reason is that people’s health has gotten better than the past. The last reason is advances in medicine that are obviously different from the past. Our life span has been getting longer, which is that people think it is a happy thing. However, it became a huge social issue now. These causes should be known by people who live in this time that has aging society as a huge problem.

The Decisions That Divide into Victory and Defeat

The Decisions That Divide into Victory and Defeat

In North American history, there is a well-known battle which was significant, costly, and the biggest ever for the US; how American history would go depended on the outcome of the battle. The location of Gettysburg in which the Battle of Gettysburg was fought by the Union and the Confederates was important to both of them because it was the place where main roads and railways converged; therefore, either, the Union or the Confederates, would occupy that area, and would be able to take a huge advantage in the American Civil War. The Union’s leader was George G. Meade, and the Confederates’ leader was Robert E. Lee. This large battle was fought by them for three days since July 1st in 1863. The inferior strategy of Confederate leaders was a significant factor contributing to the Confederate loss at the Battle of Gettysburg due to the Union’ ability to use landforms well, the Union’s defensive strategy and Lee’s inability to command his troops well.

The confederates won the Battle of Chancellorsville that was fought from April 30 to May 6 in 1863, and Lee, who got momentum from that victory, determined to invade the North more in summer. His troops actually started to move on the North. Even though Gettysburg was vital for both the Union and the Confederates, they did not aggressively invade the area. One of the reasons why they did not try to invade there aggressively was because they did not want a big conflict against each other if they attempted to occupy the area. The Battle of Gettysburg, however, happened because of a skirmish had happened beginning in June. Starting on June 3, they had skirmished; Lee sent his troops as the skirmish dragged on. This fight eventually got bigger, and on July 1, they committed the balk of their troops to the battle, which would be known as the Battle of Gettysburg.

First of all, the Union’s clever use of topography led to their victory at the Battle of Gettysburg. Gettysburg has unique landforms. It might be considered that the military that could use the landforms well could win. Spruill (2011) argues that The Union’s position that is higher than any observable location, seminary ridge, makes the confederates’ movement limited (p. 53). The Union took high ground, so they were able to look over the situation around them and grasp their situation. Because of that, the Confederates was not allowed to move freely; in addition, even though the Union could see their enemies clearly because of high ground, the Confederates, conversely, was not able to see their opponents.

Moreover, Spruill (2011) reports that Meade’s artillery team’s chief, General Henry Hunt, had been checking his military position between Cemetery Hill and Little Round Top, and then he noticed that the artillery of the Confederates had been being moved to next place; therefore, the Union was able to prepare to defeat them (p. 86-87). Relying on his report, in fact, the Union could see what the Confederates try to do next, and they could be ready well to fight against the opponents who had not even thought of well-prepared enemies for their attack. High places were not only for observation but also for defense.

Doyle (2006) states that the Union always uses the landforms well at Gettysburg, they position themselves at the high place to observe the enemy and to defend their artillery on reverse slopes (p. 5). This shows that being at high places was connected to defense their artillery (p. 5). Shells of artillery fly in an arc, so it was very difficult to damage the Union’s artillery that was set at the higher position from that of the Confederates. Their use of the landforms was clever and logical enough to resist their opponents.

In addition to their use of topography, the defensive tactics of the Union swayed the battle to their side. Use of defensive strategy was one of the biggest causes that they won the battle. Doyle (2006) reports that later in the war the Union changed its strategy to a more defensive fortification. This was due to the Confederates changing their tactics from an aggressive attacking strategy, to a more siege-based strategy (p. 4). According to him, they changed their strategy in this war, which was a correct choice for them to win. Furthermore, the United States army hired people to build stone walls (p. 4). In addition, the stone wall on Cemetery Ridge helped the Union forces to resist the Confederates attack during Pickett’s Charge (p.4). In other words, they made stone walls to withdraw the confederates even though they needed to hire extra people (p. 4). The combination of higher places and stone walls helped them to model their strong defensive strategy (p. 4).

They did not only use stone walls; Hess (2001) reports that they used earthwork that was made of dirt piled to defense their guns. It is 2 feet tall and is extended to 380 yards (p. 114). Relying on his article, they also established earthwork which was very large. It was welcomed by the Union’s soldiers for themselves to be protected (p. 114).

Moreover, Spruill (2011) states that on July 3 the Union immediately set foot soldiers and artillery to attack, and they place their artillery on Culp’s Hill. These cannons are there to cover the foot soldiers. As the sky start to be bright, the Union begins to attack with the artillery and infantry; this action made The Confederates surprised because they did not expect that the Union, which usually was not aggressive, attacked aggressively. (p. 82). The Union’s aggressive action was very effective because of their defensive tactic (p. 82). The Confederates soon turned to defense, and they fought enduring their tiredness by at 10:30 in the morning (p. 82). Culp’s Hill that was important for both to get the advantage of this battle was still occupied by the Union at the time, and then the Confederates withdrew their troops from the fight (p. 82). The choice to switch their defensive strategy to the aggressive strategy for instance was a right choice. Because they defensive strategy wisely and effectively as one of the most important choices, they could grab the victory.

Though the Union’s effective strategy was pivotal to their victory in the battle, it was also Lee's lack of supervision of his troops that led to the Confederate defeat. Lee might have been known as a great leader; in fact, he was a smart leader, but he was not perfect. Spruill (2011) claims that Lee had no meeting with his commanders at the night of July 2 even though he should have had it to discuss about the next day’s plan. The meeting was necessary for the confederates to carry out Lee’s plan (p. 83). This means that he gave no instructions to his commanders. In other words, it was obvious that he should have had a meeting with his commanders at that night. For this reason, he knew his troops’ situation that should had been known by him already in the morning of July 3 (p. 84). In addition, he needed to cancel his initial plan after knowing the situation (p. 84).

Moreover, Jones (1968) reports that:

Lee had other objectives for an offensive movement, but in his statements of them they seem quite vague. At various times he spoke of the following objectives: to "operate advan- tageously," to gain some "material advantage," to accomplish something "of importance," to "make some impression on the enemy," to achieve "good results," to "give occupation" to the enemy, and to obtain "valuable and substantial results." 10 That Lee's primary objectives were limited to the impact of the offensive on the situation of his own army is indicated by his failure to plan on a battle11 and by his subsequent evaluation of the Gettysburg campaign as a "'general success. (p. 3)

This reveals that he did not give clear instructions to his commanders (p. 3). The instruction was obscure enough to confuse his commanders. His commanders might not have known meaning of the “good results”. There were a lot of ways to grasp his idea in this instruction, which means it was hard for them to exactly do what Lee wants them to do.

According the letter that Lee wrote to Jefferson after the American Civil War, he states that he wishes that what he expected could work well together because if it was so, the Confederates might have won at Gettysburg (Lee, 1863). This means that he acknowledged that he was not able to do his best and command his troops well.

In conclusion, the Union won the Battle of Gettysburg for three reasons: competence of the Union’s use of the landforms, defensive tactics of the Union force and Lee’s inability to command well. In the American Civil War, obviously the Battle of Gettysburg was vital for both the Union and the Confederates, to decide who could dictate the future of the country. It has been considered what would have happened what the Confederates would have won the battle, but nobody can know the answer. Even though the battle has been studied a lot by professionals, historians and geographers for a long time, it is hard to stop thinking that something it will be revealed or still discovered. This huge, costly and significant battle will be handed down from generation to generation as a pivotal battle for North America.
