Hello. Today, I am at Joei-ji Temple in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

こんにちは。今日は、山口県の常栄寺に来ました。

Joei-ji temple belongs to the Rinzai-shu school of Zen Buddhism. I have been to Joei-ji Temple three times, and the temple here has two beautiful Japanese gardens. A self-proclaimed Japanese garden girl, I will do my best to introduce the highlights of these gardens as an amateur reporter.

常栄寺は、東福寺派臨済宗のお寺です。臨済宗は禅宗のひとつで、「人間は生まれながらにして仏性を持ち、本来みな清浄である」という教えの宗派です。私がここに来るのは3度目なのですが、とても素敵な日本庭園が２つありますので、日本庭園好きの自称庭女子の私が、素人なりにここのお庭の鑑賞ポイントをお話しさせて頂きます。

First, the quality of the atmosphere completely changes after passing through the gate, and it makes me feel wonderful. There is beauty in every corner of this temple. For example, look at the clean, clear lines created by the mossy mounds. I personally think it creates a wonderful effect. I imagine that this garden must be maintained by professional gardeners with a very traditional, discerning attitude -- the quality of the work is truly outstanding.

まず、ここは門をくぐった瞬間の空気の質が全然違います。このお寺は、隅々の美しさが半端ないです。例えば、この苔の生えた盛り土のラインを見て下さい。一糸乱れずとはまさにこういうことだと思います。庭のお手入れは、造園業者さんがやられているそうですが、多分、腕が良くてこだわりの強い頑固者タイプのまさに昔気質の職人の方がやられているのではないでしょうか。素晴らしい仕事ぶりだと思います。

In addition, as you pass through the entrance hall, you will notice the delicate, yet somehow effortless decorations of dolls and flowers. It’s a little Japanese omotenashi (gesture of hospitality), which makes me feel very welcomed!

また、本殿入口を入ると分かるのですが、花や人形などの飾り方や気配りが細やかで、しかもさりげない。気付かない人は気付かないくらいのさりげなさで、とても素晴らしいです。

The first garden I’m going to tell you about is the dry landscape garden, or Karesansui, which was made by Mirei Shigemori (1896-1975), called ”Nanmei garden.” Shigemori was a famous garden architect in the Showa period (1926-1989). His major masterpiece is recognized to be his work for the gardens at Tofuku-ji Temple in Kyoto. I love these gardens -- in fact, their beauty was what initially got me so interested in Japanese gardens in the first place! They are avant-garde and revolutionary creations, so I was deeply moved by them. I strongly recommend you to visit the gardens there too!

では、1つ目のお庭をご紹介します。こちらが、重森三玲が作庭した南溟庭と呼称のついた枯山水です。重森三玲は、昭和を代表する作庭家です。このお寺は東福寺派ということなので、そのご縁でこのお寺の庭も作庭されたのではないでしょうか。 東福寺は京都にあるお寺で、そのお庭は当時の時代よりも２つも３つも先を行くモダンなお庭です。 そのお庭を作られたのが重森です。 私が日本庭園にハマったのは、東福寺のお庭を見て感動したのがきっかけです。まだ見ていない方は、ぜひ鑑賞に行かれることをお勧めします。

Anyway, let’s get back to this garden. Look at the stone in the middle -- Don’t you get the feeling that the garden is like a small solar system orbiting the central stone? I think it is the highlight of the garden. There are nine arrangements of stones in the garden. Ancient Buddhism conceptualizes the form of the universe as “Kusen Hakkai” (Nine Mountains and Eight Seas), and we can imagine that these stone arrangements represent the 9 mountains. In that case, the central stone becomes ”Shumi-sen”, which is a mountain at the center of the cosmos in Buddhist teaching. When I closed my eyes and imagined sitting down on the Shumi-sen, I felt as if I was wrapped inside a microcosmic universe, and the sun and moon were rotating over my head. It helped to calm my mind. The circle lines in the sand lead outward, forming perfect circles running through various obstacles. I think the nice balance between these lines and the stone arrangements gives the garden such a sense of cosmic significance.

ところで、お庭全体を見ていると、ある1つの石に求心力があるのを感じないでしょうか。この求心力が、このお庭のポイントだと思います。このお庭には９つの山があるので、古代インドの宇宙観「九仙八海」を表現しているとすると、この求心力のある石が、宇宙の中心とされる須弥山なのかもしれません。この須弥山の上で静かに目を閉じ座っている自分を想像すると、太陽と月が頭上を巡る大きな世界に包まれて安心感を抱き、心が穏やかになっていくのを感じます。この石を中心に円が外側へ向かっていますが、障害物があっても円の線に乱れがありません。この枯山水が宇宙の美しさを表現できているのは、石の配置のバランスの良さと、この乱れのない円の線によるものだと思います。

The next Japanese garden I want to tell you about is the strolling garden with pond made by Sesshu (1420-1502).

次にご紹介するお庭は、雪舟庭です。

Sesshu was a Zen monk during the Muromachi period (1336-1573). He was also a famous Japanese sumi ink painter and known for his skill at creating Japanese gardens, so there are a lot of his gardens around Japan. The garden here is one of his four big works.

雪舟は、室町時代の禅僧で、水墨画の大家です。また、お庭のデザインも得意とされていたようで、日本各地に雪舟庭が残っています。その中で、この雪舟庭は、雪舟四大庭園のひとつと言われています。

The pond in the garden was created in the shape of the Japanese kanji “kokoro”, which means “heart” or “mind.” You can look at the kokoro from all directions while you are strolling around the pond. When you look at the garden from the main hall, don't you almost feel a centripetal force drawing you into the center of the pond? If you look carefully, you can see that the stones were placed as if they were attracted to the center of the pond.

このお庭の池は、心という字をかたどっているそうです。池泉回遊式、つまり池の周りを散歩できるお庭なので、心を四方八方から眺めることができます。そして、本堂からこのお庭を見ていると、池の中心に強い求心力を感じないでしょうか。よく見ていると、池の周りに配置された石も、池の中心に吸い寄せられているような構図で配置されているのが分かります。

As you walk slowly along the path around the pond, surrounded by the rich natural scenery, you will begin to feel peace of mind. While you observe the Kokoro shape made by the pond, I recommend that you think about your own Kokoro. You will gradually become calm. You will be able to feel that your entire being is being purified. Then, please think carefully about what forms the center of your mind: in the garden, there is a centripetal force drawing you to the kokoro of the pond, but in your own life, what forms the central force, the kokoro, of your mind? You need not be in a hurry. The garden will give you plenty of time to think.

この自然豊かな池の周りをゆったりと歩くことで、俗世界の喧噪を忘れることができ、また、心をかたどった池を眺めると同様に、自分の心もゆっくりと眺め見ることで、次第に穏やかになり、浄化されていく自分を感じることができます。そして、池の中心に求心力があるように、自分の心の中心は何か、自分は普段何に引き寄せられているのかをじっくり考えてみるのです。急ぐことはありません。この池の散歩道は十分な時間を私たちに与えてくれます。

Today, I was able to enjoy the beautiful scenery here, which was even more sparkling with the leftover rainwater. I hope that you will be able to calm your mind while watching the wonderful gardens in the video.
