1. Introduction:

I am Ainu, a member of the First Nation in Japan, and identify as Genderqueer Trans Masculine. In my youth, I worked as a Geisha, dancer, and singer, also serving drinks as a form of sex work. I also identify as neurodivergent. As a first-generation trans activist, I worked as a first transgender studies professor for over 16 years in Japan. Currently, I am a refugee claimant as a member of Rainbow Refugee in Vancouver.

I am pursuing an additional PhD to become an independent researcher in Canada, aiming to maintain independence similar to that of a non-profit organization while advocating for human rights and social justice.

2. Skills and Qualifications:

I began fieldwork in 1994, focusing on immigration, racism, and the transgender community's health and experiences, particularly in everyday interactions. I hold a bachelor's degree in international relations, a master's degree in sociology, and a PhD. I worked as a first transgender studies professor and served on the board of the Japanese Gender Identity Disorder Association and the Tokyo Metropolitan Human Rights Committee. Additionally, I received multiple grants for my research, including funding for creating online oral history archives toward the end of my career in Japan.

3. Reasons:

I am applying because, despite applying for Legal Aid for my refugee application and receiving a $5000 award in the first year from the university, but I lack sufficient savings. Initially, no other support was available for the program. However, obtaining the award would provide an excellent environment, with top-notch supervisors. Additionally, I recently started fundraising efforts, and receiving this award would positively impact these initiatives.

4. Motivation:

With my background and years of experience as an unsuccessful transgender studies professor in Japan due to discrimination, obtaining this award would enable me to finally realize the projects I am applying for. It would provide financial stability and validate the importance of my work and the struggles I have faced as a refugee claimant. This support would empower me to pursue my research and advocacy with renewed vigor and dedication, while also strengthening my ongoing fundraising initiatives, expanding my reach and impact. Your support would mean the world to me. Thank you for considering my application.
