今年もあと数ヶ月となったところで、かねてより企画していたCURLY FLATS FARMのサイドストーリーや農家になって初めて知ったことなどをひっそりと記していく場所を設けることにしました。

かねてより、は実はかなり前からなので、相当構想期間が長かったわけですが、その割には大したことは記されていかないような気がしています。

そういう予防線を張っておいて、ゆるりゆるりとやってみますね。

さて、CURLY FLATS FARMとはなんなのか？

ここには、ちょっと変わったオーストラリア人オーナーと変わり者のスタッフ、２頭の犬（「配膳係」と呼ばれています）とともに暮らす豚、羊、ヤギ、鶏、ウサギ、アヒルたちがいます。

動物園ではありません。
ちゃんとした正真正銘の畜産牧場です。
北海道の南の方、日高町の山奥の小さな谷にある小さな牧場です。

ここではRegenerative Agriculture（環境再生型農業）と言われる、最近流行の循環型農業の一種のやり方を踏襲しながら運営しています。
不慣れですがね。

その裏庭ではなにが起こっているのか？

こんなにいろいろな動物たちがここで何をしているのか？
もちろん、美味と誉高い放牧肉として多くのグルメのみなさんのお皿にいつの日か乗る日が来ます。
それと同時に彼らにはそれぞれここでの重要な役割があるのです。

ファームの人間たちは苦心惨憺、試行錯誤してそれぞれの動物たちにあった生活環境を整え、彼らがその重要な役割を存分に果たせるようなファームの仕組みを作っていきます。

スーパーやレストランで食べ物に接するときには、目にすることのない様々な物語がそこにはあります。

どこの農家もそうであるように、きれいごとだけではやっていけません。

いい年したオトナがわんわん泣いてしまうようなことや、髪をかきむしりたくなるような大きな失敗もあるわけです。

しかし、その中でもフッと笑ってしまうような出来事もあり、新しいことを知る、やってみる喜びがあったりするのです。

そういう裏庭のはなしがここに綴られていきます。

First Backyard

With a few months to go this year, we have decided to set up a place where we can quietly write about the side stories of CURLY FLATS FARM that we have been planning for some time, as well as things we have learned since we first became farmers.

So, what is CURLY FLATS FARM?

It's a place where pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits, rabbits and ducks live with a slightly eccentric Australian owner, a group of eccentric staff and two dogs (known as the 'serving crew').

It is not a zoo. It is a genuine and proper livestock farm. It is a small farm in a small valley deep in the mountains of the town of Hidaka, in the south of Hokkaido. We operate here following a type of circular agriculture that is very popular these days, called Regenerative Agriculture. However, we are not used to it.
The idea has been in the works for quite some time now, so it's been a long time in the making, but it seems to us that not a great deal has been written about it.

Keeping those precautions in place, we' re going to try to keep it going slowly and slowly.

What is going on in that backyard?

What are all these different animals doing here? Of course, one day they will be on the plates of many gourmets as highly prized, pasture-raised meat. But they also have an important role to play here.

Farmers work hard, by trial and error, to create a living environment that suits each animal and a farm structure that allows them to perform their important role to the greatest extent possible.

There are many stories there that you don't see when you come across food in supermarkets or restaurants.

As in any farm, you can't do it just by being beautiful. There are things that would make a grown-up cry and big mistakes that make you want to scratch your hair out.

But there are also things that make you laugh, and there is the joy of learning new things and trying new things.
