ソンクラーンという祭に、今日も参加した。知らない人に水を掛けて良い日というのが、やはり面白い。街の中心地だけ、人が多い場所だけで行われているものかと思ったら、路地みたいな場所でも水を掛けられ、バケツをぶっかけられた。バンコクの街、いやタイの国、全てで祭をやっている事になる。小さな商店街でも、大きな通りでも、ビーチでも、新築の家の前でも。その広大さに、嬉しくなった。老若男女全員が水鉄砲を持ち、水を掛け合う。歳を重ねた5060の女性達が音楽を流して、ずぶ濡れで踊っている。いつもジュースを売っていたりする全ての人が踊っていた。

爽やかな水遊びという感じだった。水鉄砲みんなで持てば恥ずかしくない、という感じだった。こんなもの毎週やってくれ、と思ったけれど、オリンピックが4年に1度のように、こういうものも毎日やるものではないのだろう。

I participated in the Songkran festival again today. It's interesting that it's a day when it's okay to throw water on strangers. I thought it was only held in the center of the city, in crowded places, but people were thrown water and buckets were thrown on people even in places like alleys. The festival is held all over Bangkok, and indeed the whole of Thailand. In small shopping streets, on big streets, on beaches, and in front of newly built houses. I was happy at the vastness of it. Everyone, men and women, young and old, had water guns and splashed water on each other. Women in their 50s and 60s were playing music and dancing soaking wet. Everyone who usually sells juice was dancing.

Playing in the water was refreshing. It would be less embarrassing if everyone had a water gun. I hope this event will be held every week.
