今日は「節分」について、できるだけ簡単な英語で紹介してみようと思います。

節分 Setsubun

①「節分」って何？
What is "Setsubun"？

「節分」とは季節の分け目のこと。
2月の節分は冬の終わりを祝うものです。
"Setsubun" literally means the day to divide seasons, so we have four "Setsubun" in a year. In February, it marks the end of winter. 

②「節分」っていつ？
When is "Setsubun"?

旧暦に基づいて、2月3日か4日にお祝いをすることが多いです。
It is usually celebrated on Feb 3rd or 4th, marking the transition from winter to spring according to the lunar calendar. 

③何をするの？
What do people do to celebrate?

お祝いの仕方は色々ありますが、よく知られているのは豆まきです。
There are several ways to celebrate "Setsubun." One of the most popular ways is to throw roasted soy beans, called "mamemaki." 

「鬼は外！福は内！」と言いながら、家の中や外で豆を投げることで、悪いものを追い払い、健康や幸運を呼び込むといわれています。
While people throw beans inside and outside their houses, they cry "Oni wa Soto! Fuku wa Uchi! (Devils out! Fortunes In!)" We believe this will make any devil spirits go out of their houses and bring them health and happiness.

豆まきの後は、自分の年の数だけ豆を食べます。＊地域によっては、自分の年に1を足して、その数の豆を食べると良いとされています。
After scattering beans, people eat the same number of beans as their age. *In some areas, it is considered good for individuals to add one to their age and eat that number of beans.

恵方巻 Ehomaki

恵方巻を食べることも節分の習慣です。
People eat a big sushi roll, called "Ehomaki" on Setsubun.

①恵方巻って何？
What is "Ehomaki"?

恵方巻とは7つの具材を入れて巻いた太巻きです。その年の恵方を向いて食べると良いといわれています。
"Ehomaki" is a thick sushi roll with seven ingredients rolled with rice. People are supposed to eat the entire roll while facing the lucky direction of the year. 

目を閉じて願い事をしながら食べる人もいるそうです。
Some people close their eyes and make a wish while eating the roll.

②いつ食べるの？
When do you eat the "Ehomaki"?

節分の日、特に夜に食べる人が多いです。
People eat the roll on the day of Setsubun. Many people have one for dinner. 

③どんな意味があるの？
What does it mean to eat "Ehomaki" on Setsubun?

恵方巻は「福を呼び込む」食べ物とされています。切らずに、止まらずに一気に食べることで、新しい年を幸せに過ごせるとされています。
Ehomaki is considered a lucky food believed to bring happiness and luck to those who eat it. The tradition involves not cutting the long, thick roll and eating it without stopping. This is thought to bring happiness for the year to come.

柊鰯 Holly Sardine

柊の枝といわしの頭で作った「柊鰯（ひいらぎいわし）」を玄関に飾る地域もあります。
Some people decorate their house entrance with "Hiiragi Iwashi," which literally means Holly Sardine.

①「柊鰯」って何？
What is "Hiiragi Iwashi"?

「柊鰯」はイワシの頭と柊の枝を使った飾りです。玄関に飾ります。
It's a decoration made with a sardine head and holly branches. People place it outside the front door. 

②いつ飾る？
When do people decorate it?

節分の日だけ飾る人もいれば、2月はずっと飾っているお宅もあります。
Some people decorate it only on the day of Setsubun, and others may display it throughout the entire month of February.

③なぜ柊といわしを飾るの？
Why do people make a decoration with a holly branch and a sardine head?  

ひいらぎの尖ったトゲや、イワシの独特な匂いは鬼が嫌いなものとされていて、これらを組み合わせて作ることで、鬼が家に入らないようにという魔除けになっているようです。
It is believed that the pointy holly leaves and the unique smell of sardines are things that Oni, the devils, hate.  By combining these two things that Oni dislikes, people believe they can protect their houses from the devil's spirits.
