Even though I've been teaching English for over 30 years, my experience living in a country where English is spoken is limited to about 2 years. Therefore, I try to read books and watch movies and dramas in English to supplement my lack of experience, although it's impossible to know everything through them.

The other day, my student asked about the expression "Where to?" in his textbook. This expression is often found in textbooks, typically spoken by a taxi driver.

My student said, "Can I use this expression in other situations, too?" I wasn't confident enough to give him an appropriate answer as I had never heard this expression in a real-life situation. I promised him to look it up by the next lesson.

I sometimes receive this kind of unexpected question. Although it's challenging to find the correct answer, it has been helping improve my English proficiency.

P.S. タクシーの運転手さんが「Where to?（どちらまで？」という尋ねる場面が教科書に出てきたのですが、「普通の人同士の会話（タクシー以外）」でも行き先を聞くときに使えるのかという質問を生徒さんから受けました。（この Where to? は英会話の教科書やフレーズ集にタクシー運転手さんのセリフとしてよく載っています。）

私はアメリカに通算2年弱くらいしか住んだことがなく、この表現を実際の場面での会話で聞いた記憶がなかったため、次回のレッスンまでに調べる (look it up) ことを約束しました。

いろいろ調べたところ、基本的には「どこまで（行くのか）？」を尋ねているため普通の会話でも使えるけれど目上の人に対して使ったりすると失礼に聞こえるかもしれない、というような意見がありました。普通の会話でどこへ行くのか聞きたいのであれば、"Where are you going?" や "Where are you headed?" などのほうがいいだろう、とのこと。（私も同感です。）

このように生活に密着した会話というのは意外と難しいといつも感じます。特に失礼になったり、変に馴れ馴れしいような言い方を外国人がネイティブに対して使うのは良くない気が私はしています。ただこういう感覚は人によって違うので一概に言えないところがまた難しいところです…。
