I have more opportunities to read books written by English authors these days as I often come across excellent British mystery writers on Amazon. I also enjoy BBC's mystery drama series as well.

While enjoying these works, I often encounter unfamiliar British English vocabulary. So, the other day, I decided to write them down on the back page of my vocabulary notebook, hoping that the "British Vocabulary" page would help me understand and enjoy British English books and dramas. 

The day before yesterday, I jotted down the noun "wanker" that I came across in a British mystery novel although I had doubted that I would see or hear the word again. Then, the next day, while watching a British drama series, I heard one character say, "Wanker" It was such a coincidence.

If I hadn't written down the word in my vocabulary notebook, I might have missed the word. Such coincidences sometimes happen when studying a foreign language, and they bring me joy and motivation to continue my studies.

P.S. 最近イギリス英語に触れる機会が多くなりました。アマゾンで偶然見つけたミステリー（本、ドラマ）はイギリスの物が多いです。そのせいか、少しずつですが、イギリス英語にも慣れてきました。でも単語を知らないことには聞いても聞き取れませんし、聞こえたところで意味不明（推測はできるかも）になります。

そこで、自作の英日単語帳（英日と日英用を作っています）の一番後ろのページを「Biritish English」用にしました。（いまのところ1ページ目ですが、イギリス英語用の単語は後ろからさかのぼって書いていくことにしました。）

この間、小説に出てきた「wanker」という言葉は、私の辞書には「ろくでなし」のような訳語が書かれていました。とても下品なことばのようなので二度と出会うことはしないだろうと思っていたのですが、なんと翌日BBCのドラマの男性の登場人物が一言「Wanker」と言って使っていました。（字幕には「クソタレ」と書かれていました。このドラマの状況的には、asshole みたいな使い方だという印象を持ちました。イギリス人に会う機会があったら聞いてみたいです。）

こういった偶然 (coincidence) は（私だけかもしれませんが）よく起こります。でもこういう偶然があると単語が記憶に残りやすいですし、何より楽しいです。ただ、「これはイギリス英語か？」と思って辞書を引くと、アメリカでも普通に使われている言葉だったりしてがっかりすることも多いです…。（不勉強の反省材料…。）
