英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月2本目です。歌われる詩の1回めです。今回はボブ・ディランのアルバム 'The Basement Tapes' (1975年、下) に収められた 'Tears of Rage' です(「怒りの涙」)。

ザ・バンドのピアノ奏者リチャード・マニュエル(上のジャケットでピアノ・アコーディオンを持っている人物)との共作 (歌詞をディランが、曲をマニュエルが書いたという)。

録音は1967年の夏か秋 (Big Pink, West Saugerties, New York)。［ヘイリンは、作歌と録音がおそらくアルバム 'John Wesley Harding' のセッション中の1967年10月中旬から11月後半にかけての時期と推測しています ('Revolution in the Air', 2009)。が、録音が同アルバムの録音セッションの初日の10月17日である可能性もあるとマルゴタンらは指摘します。］

マルゴタンらによれば、本歌はアルバム 'The Basement Tapes' 中、最も暗い歌といわれます。Andy Gill はこの歌をシェークスピアの『リア王』に譬えたほど。娘たちに裏切られ、狂気に陥るリア王と、国に裏切られ、怒りの涙を流す本歌の語り手とがパラレルだというわけです。

1978年に Jonathan Cott に〈「怒りの涙」のような歌を書いた時は、『リア王』の影響を特に受けていたのか？〉と訊かれ、ディランは否定しています。その否定の返事が謎めいています。

'one is one' は英国の伝統歌 'Green Grow the Rushes, O' (Roud #133 ) の一節から採られています。アイルランドのグループ Altan の同名の歌とは別の歌です。

この歌から採られていることは、Cott が '... and all alone and ever more shall be so.' と続け、ディランが 'Exactly. What comes is gone forever every time.' と応じることで確定します。

この歌は、では一体どんな歌なのでしょうか。リクス校訂版のテクストで考えてみます。

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'Tears of Rage' は、戦争の帰還兵の悲しみや怒りを、想像力を刺激する言語で織りあげる歌である。シェークスピアの『リア王』にも譬えられるほどの深い感情が唄われる。
