英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月2本目です。歌われる詩の1回めです。今回はボブ・ディランの11枚目のアルバム 'New Morning' (1970、下) に収められた 'Went to See the Gypsy' です(「ジプシーに会いに行った」)。

'New Morning' に収められたテークが録音されたのは1970年6月5日 (Columbia Recording Studios / Studio E, New York) です(ヘイリンは6月6日としています)。

これまで、いっさいコンサートで演奏したことがない歌です。〈ボブ・ディランがコンサートで唄ったことがない25の名曲〉の中に本歌が含まれています ('All across the Telegraph: A Bob Dylan Handbook')。

「ジプシー」とは、だれなのでしょう。一説にエルヴィス・プレスリーだとか。今回は、そのあたりもふくめ、考えてみます。さらに、歌がヘッセへの直接の言及とする説もあります。それにもふれます。

この歌をリクス (Christopher Ricks) らによる校訂版(2014)で考えてみます。

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'Went to See the Gypsy' は、エルヴィス・プレスリーに会いに行ったときのことを唄った歌といわれるが、ディラン自身はそれを否定する。そこにはアーティストとしてのさまざまな思いがあると考えられる。
