英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月3本目です。歌われる詩の2回めです。今回はボブ・ディラン7枚目のアルバム 'Blonde on Blonde' (1966) に収められた 'Visions of Johanna' です(「ジョアンナのヴィジョン」)。

多くの人がディランの最高傑作と考えるこの歌が録音されたのは1966年2月14日 (テーク4; Columbia Recording Studios, Nashville [アルバム 'Blonde on Blonde' に収録されたもの])。Uncut 誌は、かつてこの歌1曲だけでノーベル文学賞に値すると書いたそうです(2002年)。

本歌が書かれたのはディラン研究者クリントン・ヘイリンによると、1965年秋のこと。当時ディランは結婚したばかりの妻 Sara とマンハタンの西23丁目のチェルシー・ホテルに暮らしていました。批評家グリール・マーカスはもっと絞って、書かれたのを1965年11月9日のことだとしています。ということは、ディランが Sara と結婚する11月22日より前のことです。その日(11月9日)、米東海岸の大停電があり、ニューヨーク市を含む8州が半日のあいだ麻痺しました。

書かれた時期が分ったとしても、歌が分るかというと、そうは簡単に行きません。基本的には本歌は謎の詩とされています。音楽評論家のフィリプ・マルゴタンらは、この歌を鏡の国のアリスに喩えています。鏡の向こう側へ行って、別の現実、別の詩を発見したというわけです。一体どう解釈すればよいのでしょうか。考えてみましょう。難解な第5連は相当違う異版が存在します。それもあわせて考えてみます。

なお、今回は 'It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)' 以来の試みですが、各連のあとに分析を載せています。詩テクストはリクスらによる校訂版を用います。

まとめ

ボブ・ディランの 'Visions of Johanna' は、詩的霊感と、その喪失への怖れを主題とした、キーツの「夜啼鳥へのオード」に通じる面があるといわれる。が、その面は現行の公式版からは消されている。残ったものは、詩的霊感と、それと対照的なある女性の存在という主題である。
