ボブ・ディランのノーベル文学賞受賞式に本人に代わって出席したパティ・スミスが歌ったのが「はげしい雨が降る」でした。第2連の途中で詰まり、もう一度やり直して最後まで歌いきったことで話題になりました。

この歌はディランの歌の中ではよく研究され議論されています。下敷きになったバラッドの問題を含めて論じるべきことが多いのが特徴です。

いったいこの歌は何を歌っているのでしょうか。いまだに論じられ続けているところを見ると、この歌の問いに多くの人が心を動かされているのだと思います。2枚目のアルバム 'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan' (1963)の歌です。

長い詩なので最後までおつき合いいただくには少々の忍耐が必要です。詩そのものはディランの多くの物語詩と同様、興味深く読めます。これを十全に論じようとすれば恐らく単行本3冊くらいを要するでしょう。何とか1万字程度に収めてみようとしましたが、1万5千字を超えました。詩のテクストは必要に応じてリックス校訂版に従います。
