英詩のマガジンの本配信、今月3本目です。歌われる詩の2回めです。今回はボブ・ディラン6枚目のアルバム 'Highway 61 Revisited' (1965) に収められた 'Desolation Row' です(「廃墟の街」)。

録音は1965年8月4日。書いたのはニューヨークのタクシーに載っているときだったと、ディランは1969年に語っています。歌のタイトルはジャック・ケルアックの小説 'Desolation Angles' (1965) から採られています。この小説は 'Just like Tom Thumb's Blues' でも言及されています(4連の Housing Project Hill)。

アル・クーパーは歌の 'alley of desolation'「荒れた裏通り」とは、ニューヨークはマンハッタンの8番街(Eighth Avenue)の一角のことだと考えていましたが、歌は現実的というより、超現実的で恐ろしい風刺詩とされていることからすると、本当にそんな場所があったのかと考えさせられます。ニューヨークではアヴェニューは南北の大通りのことだと、日本でもよく知られていますから。歌詞について考えてみましょう。
