こんにちわ！皆さんは、元気が欲しいときや集中力、行動力が必要な時、オールマイティーに使える曲ってありますか？

Hello! Do you have specific music to cheer yourself up or make yourself concentrate?

私は編み物をしながら音楽を聴くのが好きです。特に元気になりたい時は音楽が一番効き目があると思います。人それぞれだとは思いますが、歌詞がある曲だとどうしても聞き入ってしまうので、作業中は歌詞のない音楽の方が好みです。

I like listening to music while I crochet. I think music is most effective when you want to feel good. I think it's different for each person, but I prefer music without lyrics while I'm working on something.

で、今、BGMとして流している「威風堂々」というクラシック音楽を聴いて１日を始めることが多いです。これが私の定番曲です。なんかこう、力が湧いてくるのですよね。最近私が一番聞いている音楽です。毎朝聴いています。朝日とともに聞くのに相応しい感じがする曲です。

I often start the day by listening to classical music titled  "Pomp and Circumstance" that is playing as BGM right now. This is my standard music. Somehow, when I listen to this, I'm feeling motivated. This is the music I listen to the most these days. I listen to it every morning. It's a song that feels good to listen to in the morning sun.

後で詳しく言いますが、これはイギリスの作曲家が作った音楽で、いかにもイングランド！という感じの旋律ですが、皆さんも一度は耳にしたことのある曲だと思います。サッカーの大会などでも流れたりする気がします。あと、アメリカの卒業式なんかでも流れるイメージです。

As I will explain in detail later, this is music made by a British composer, and it's really British-like, I feel!   I think it's  music that everyone has heard once. It will also be played at soccer matches.  Also, it brings up  an immediate image of an American graduation ceremony.

行進曲としての始まりから、中盤、キングとクイーンが民衆の前に顔を出して手を振るところを想像します。私は、たまに、歩くときにも聞くのですが、そうすると手も前後振り切って、規律良く、姿勢正して歩くことになります。周りから見ると一人行進しているようで滑稽かもしれませんが、ついつい体が音楽につられてしまいます。そして２分あたりの有名な旋律に来ると大衆に手を振りたくなる衝動に駆られますが、これは妄想までに留めています。

It begins as a march, I imagine a King and Queen waving in front of a cheering crowd.   I sometimes listen it while I walk, but then I swing my hands back and forth, and I walk in a disciplined and marching manner. Seen by others, it may seem funny, as if I am marching alone, but my body just gets caught up in the music. And when I come to the famous melody around two minutes in, I get the urge to wave to the masses, but I stop myself short.

ちなみにこの、威風堂々は、２０世紀の初めにエルガーというイングランドの作曲家が作りました。６部構成ですが、だいたい聞くのは第１部が多いのではないかと思います。クラシックのオーケストラ曲は長いものが多く、何年もかけて作られることが多いので、未完となっている作品は多いですよね。他の方が最後追加したりして完成させることも結構あります。この作品も第一番から四番は1901年から1907年にかけて作曲され、第5番は晩年の1930年に作曲されたそうです。第六番は遺稿として見つかり、それを２００５年から６年にかけて他の作曲家が補筆して完成したそうです。ということは千九百一年にスタートして最終別の方が終わらせた二千六年ということで百年以上明けて完成したってことになるんですかね。

'Pomp and circumstance' was created by an English composer named Elgar at the beginning of the 20th century. It consists of 6 parts, but I think that most of you hear only the 1st part. Many classical orchestral songs are long and often made over many years, so there are many unfinished works. It is not rare that another composer will finish an incomplete work.  It is said that the 1st to 4th parts were composed from 1901 to 1907, and the 5th was composed in 1930 in his later years. The 6th was found as a manuscript, and it was completed by another composer from 2005 to 2006. That means that it started in 1901 and completed in 2006,  after more than 100 years.

この動画を作るにあたり、全てのパートを聴きましたが、聞き覚えがあるのは１部だけでした。

題名は日本語では威風堂々、です。確かに威風堂々とした曲の始まりです。とても良い訳だと思います。原題は'Pomp and Circumstance"と言って直訳では威風堂々にはなりませんが、これはとても的を得た意訳だと思いますね。この原題はシェイクスピアのオセロのセリフから取られているそうです。外国のメディアについて触れる時、特に英語圏の文学や音楽、映画などを楽しむ場合、基礎教養として、シェイクスピアやキリスト教について知っておくと倍楽しむことができると思います。多くの作品の中で、シェイクスピアや聖書の引用がなされることが多いからです。

The title translates to solemnity in Japanese. It is certainly the beginning of a dignified piece of music. I think it's a very good translation. The original title is 'Pomp and Circumstance', which is not a dignified translation, but I think this is a very relevant translation. This original title is taken from Shakespeare's Othello. When you want understand foreign media, especially when you enjoy English-based literature, music, movies, etc., if you know Shakespeare and Christianity as a basic culture, you can enjoy it more and understand it very well.  As you may know, Shakespeare and the Bible are often quoted.

話がそれましたが、結局のところ、私が好きなパートはこの第一部の部分だけです。

I got off the topic, but essentially my favorite part is the 1st.

さらにいうと、特に２分に差し掛かる頃の有名な旋律部分が一番好きです。この旋律は時の英国国王エドワード７世が、エルガーに「あなたはやがて世界中の人々が口ずさむことになる旋律を作曲しましたね。この旋律に歌詞をつけて歌にしたらどうでしょう？」という風に伝えたそうます。そして後に「希望と栄光の国」というタイトルの歌となり、今では第2の英国国歌として親しまれています。

Furthermore, I especially like the famous melody part when it's around 2 minutes of the 1st part.  This tune is a moment of calm in the middle of the Pomp and Circumstance March. When Elgar was asked to write a work for the King's coronation, he worked the suggestion into his Coronation Ode. Later, it became a song titled "Land of Hope and Glory," and is now popular as the second British national anthem.

私は好きすぎて、編み物している時もこの第一部だけを好きなだけ繰り返して１時間ぐらい経っていることもあります。

I like it so much that even when I'm crocheting, I put the 1st part on repeat as many times as I like.
