Diversity of perspectives. It may be difficult to imagine this in words alone. However, when we hold a dialogue in front of a work of art, it becomes clear that "various viewpoints can exist.

What stories do you find in this masterpiece?

In this painting, we first look outward, following the cat in the center of the image. Nearby is a view of the countryside, and in the distance are several birds soaring against the sky and a beautiful mountain. I thought it might be a morning glow from the sky, but a cat-owning friend of mine had a brilliant guess: "It must be evening because cats stay in warm places in the morning, and they would not be along with the window.

There is also a hairpin in the lower-left corner and a teacup and a tenugui (hand towel) in the lower right corner. My friend asked, "Is the one missing hairpin the one that the woman tried on to see if it would work? The tenugui (hand towel) and the teacups suggest that they were used until a short time ago.

This painting shows the antechamber of the Yoshiwara brothel with a view of Washimyojin and Mt. Fuji. If you consider the information about the Yoshiwara brothel, doesn't it change your impression and awareness of the painting?　The cat is not merely gazing outside but may represent the feelings of the women working there who "want to go out. The hairpins are tools of the women's trade, while the tenugui (hand towels) and tea bowls are probably for male customers.

It is interesting to see how different people find different stories and insights in the same work. Individual realizations also change depending on knowledge, mental conditions, and other factors. It is not a one-sided imposition of only medical correctness. ......
　In the world of medicine, where complex backgrounds and various factors are intertwined, there will be more and more questions that the dualism of right and wrong cannot answer. Research on the treatment of disease is advancing rapidly in every field. However, most patients do not know the latest information front us. Instead, a large percentage of their data is based on the images that medical professionals feel uncomfortable with, obtained through conversations with their close friends, newspaper articles, and TV specials. If we silently and unilaterally state, "Medically speaking, that is not the case," the patient will feel reprimanded, saying, "The viewpoints you have seen, heard, felt, or thought is incorrect. As a result, the patient may shrink, and their natural reactions and comments may be stifled.

Be aware that it is natural for everyone to have a different point of view.

In addition to judgment based on professional knowledge and skills, we as medical professionals need to respect the principle that "different people have different points of view," and we need to have the capacity to recognize that different ways of thinking exist. Patients who are suffering from illnesses and nervously come into the doctor's office, a space where they can be listened to without denying what they have to say, is a very reassuring place.

We are all aliens

Hiroyuki Yasuda's comic "Chihiro-san" (Akita Shoten, 2018) says,

This line gives strength to those of us who struggle daily with how to deal with people. Rather than being eager to understand a patient in a short period fully, we can be aware that "differences are natural" and relax our shoulders in our medical practice.
