1990年代半ば、元々パンクロック派生のポップパンクとハードコア(ポストハードコア)は自然に融合し、聞きやすさとハードな感情表現の共存を可能にした。

エモロックと呼ばれ始めたそのバンド達は、1980年代ワシントンD.C.ハードコアシーンからの影響を強く受けているため、パンクの精神が基礎にある。

脈々と受け継がれたDIY精神が音楽の探求心と重なり勃興したムーヴメントと言えるだろう。

曲中に漂う異常なまでの哀愁や、疾走するビートが聴取の心をかき乱し、解放させる。

そして、詩的情緒感を元に自身の弱さや情けなさを叫ぶボーカルに、大衆は心を開いていった。

その後エモロックはアンダーグラウンドシーンから一躍メインストリームに駆け上がったが、短命バンドが多いこともあり、解散が重なるタイミングであった1999年を境に一時的に収束する。

しかし2000年代初頭には、エモロックの系譜から数多くのバンドが結成され、第二次エモムーヴメントが誕生。

現在もエモロックのリヴァイバルは留まることを知らない。

"エモ"の線引きは曖昧なもので、時代により商業用のラベル化とも捉えられる事が少なくないが、そもそも

『エモーショナルじゃない音楽なんてない』のだ。

そのうえで、Emo Rockというジャンルが出来上がった事実。

Emo Rock then rose from the underground scene to the mainstream, but it temporarily converged after 1999, when a number of short-lived bands were breaking up at the same time.

In the early 2000s, however, numerous bands were formed from the Emo Rock lineage, and a second Emo movement was born.

Today, Emo-Rock revival continues unabated.

The line between "Emo" and "Emo Rock" is a blurry one, and it is often seen as a commercial label, depending on the era.

However, there is no such thing as "Music that is not emotional."
