ポピュラー音楽がほとんど存在しなかった時代に、ブルースは都市部から離れた田舎で発展した。

Country Bluesと呼ばれるその音楽は、恵まれない環境で信仰を失った黒人歌手によって歌われた。

カントリーミュージックからの進化ではなく、ゴスペルのカウンターカルチャーとして誕生したことから、『悪魔の歌』とも呼ばれていたことで知られている。

この頃のブルースは自発的かつ即興的で、歌手はさまざまなコード上で思い浮かんだ歌詞を歌ったが、悲劇的な内容や憂鬱な出来事についてのものも多かった。

1927年頃にミシシッピ川のデルタ地域で進化したDelta Blues(別名:Mississippi Blues)、東海岸のブルーススタイルを網羅したよりカントリーライクなPiedmont Blues、ブギウギのプロトタイプと呼ばれるHokum Bluesなど、Country Bluesのサブジャンルは、アメリカ南東部の地域と同じ数ほどあった。

Delta Blues (a.k.a. Mississippi Blues), which evolved in the Delta region of the Mississippi River around 1927, a more country-like Piedmont Blues covering the blues style on the east coast. There were a number of subgenres of Country Blues, such as Hokum Blues, which is called the prototype of Boogie Woogie, as in the region of the southeastern United States.
