観光スポットとしてはエンパイア・ステート・ビルディングの方が有名だと思うのですが、僕の中でのニューヨークというと、まずはこのクライスラー・ビルなんですね。最初に泊まったチェルシーの宿からは見えかったのですが、後半のレキシントンの宿からは、すぐにこの建物を見上げることが出来ました。最初に意識したのは1982年、ジョー・ジャクソンのアルバム「ナイト・アンド・デイ」でした。テーマはニューヨーク。ジャケットは濃いブルーに白黒、という色遣いのシンプルでスタイリッシュなイラスト。ジョーが摩天楼をバックに、ピアノの前で作曲に悩んでいるという内容でした。その摩天楼の中で一際目立っていたのがこのクライスラー・ビルだったんです。イラストでは特徴的な最上階の部分をギザギザの線で表していた訳ですが、そのギザギザにヤラれて、取り憑かれたようにクライスラー・ビルを描いた時期がありました。今回の旅で一番写真を撮りまくったのもこのビル。徐々に近づいていきいろんなポイントから撮影、真下まで行きましたが、悲しいかなあまりにも高い存在で、近づけば近づく程姿が遠のくという感じでした。まるで叶わぬ恋の様ですね。なーんて・・・。

人間の考えることは14年くらいでは変わりませんね。ここで触れられているジョー・ジャクソンのアルバムジャケットは、その後も興味が続いています。2018年に発売されたBenny  Singsのアルバム「city melody」のジャケットのイメージは、おそらく「Night and Day」に触発されているのではないかなあ。絵柄は若干違うけれども、受ける印象が一緒なのです。どちらも、素晴らしいイラストです。

I think the Empire State Building is more famous as a tourist spot, but in my mind, New York is first and foremost the Chrysler Building. I couldn't see it from my first lodging in Chelsea, but from my second lodging in Lexington, I could immediately look up at this building. The first time I became aware of it was in 1982, on Joe Jackson's album "Night and Day". The theme was New York. The cover was a simple yet stylish illustration in dark blue and black and white. In the skyscraper, the Chrysler Building stood out the most. In the illustration, the distinctive top floor is represented by jagged lines, and there was a time when I was so fascinated by the jagged lines that I drew the Chrysler Building as if I were obsessed with it. This was the building I took the most photos of on this trip. I gradually approached the building and photographed it from various points, and even went right underneath it, but sadly, it was so tall that the closer I got, the further away it became. It was like an unfulfilled love. Hmmm....

What people think doesn't change in about 14 years. I'm still interested in Joe Jackson's album cover mentioned here, and I think the image on the cover of Benny Sings' album "city melody" released in 2018 was probably inspired by "Night and Day". The design is slightly different but the impression is the same. Both are wonderful illustrations.
